Box-B, Rt. 1 Stanley, N.C. 28164 Vewn-NOdNOD -- - North Carolinians: When the North Carolina Legislature meets ‘in June, the House will consider a bill that was passed by the Senate in 1981, S.B. 411. The purpose of this bill is to clarify and modernize the definition of chiropractic. And it's about time: the present definition was passed in 1917! The North Carolina Chiropractic Asso- ciation endorses S.B. 411 in the belief that specific language regulating chiropractic and other health care providers is in the public interest. Strangely, the North Carolina Medical Society is opposing S.B. 411, and specifically the inclusion of this statement: “The doctor of chiropractic is a primary health provider.” This statement is very important to all North Carolinians. It means that a patient has the right to select his or her own doctor, whether medical or chiropractic, and not be forced in some Chiropractors are already considered to be primary health providers by the public, the federal government, federal and state Workers Compensation, Medicare, Medicaid, private accident and health insurance plans, and the North Carolina State Health Plan. Thousands of North Carolinians prefer treatment by a chiropractic physician when it is appropriate, and they should not be denied this freedom of choice. Inclusion of the “primary health provider” statement in S.B. 411 would guarantee con- doctor. media. situations to depend on a referral by another doctor in order to receive health insurance payments. tinuation of the public's freedom to select a We feel strongly that S.B. 411, with the “primary health provider” clause, is in the public interest.
