Lady Pats Lose

Flint Groves Baptist Church
of Gastonia defeated Massey
Hill Baptist Church of Fayet-
teville, 62-56, at Wake Forest
University - recently to become
state champions for high school
boys in the North Carolina Bap-
tist Association State Playoffs.
Dell Cline had 28 points to
lead the winners. Jeff Hayes had
14 points and Scott Alexander
12.
Flint Groves went through
the Gastonia league unbeaten to
advance to the sectionals, where
they defeated First ‘Baptist of
Kannapolis and Newell Baptist
of Charlotte. That placed them
in the regionals, where they
defeated First Baptist of Boone
to advance to the: state title
game. :
At | the beginning of © the
season, over 150 teams from
throughout North Carolina
began competition for the state
title.

conference play Thursday with a
7-1 loss to Crest. :
The Crest ladies obtained only
two hits but took advantage of
11 KM errors. Angie Keeter led
the KM hitting with 2-for-3 and
Stephanie Owens, Tanya Brown,
Angie Yates and Christi Arant
had one hit each.
The KM girls defeated West
Lincoln 16-8 in a non-conference
- game. KM collected 14 hits with
Sylvia White leading the way
with 3-for<, including a home
- run. Susie Moore, Edie Herndon
and Tonja Weeks added two hits
each, One of Herndon’s was a
home run. : ‘
The Lady Patriots play at
Burns Thursday.
Coach Candy Albergine’s
ladies have won the Western
Association title the past two
years, compiling a 20-0 record
during that stretch. But she faces
a rebuiding task this year as only
three starters return.
Kristal Huffstetler
Performs In Virginia
Miss Kristal Huffstetler,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde .
Huffstetler of Kings Mountain,
has just returend from a week in
Beford, Va. where she was
among 20 singers and dancers
performing under the direction
of Mrs. Margaret Brackett at the
National Home of the Elks.
While performing at the Egg
and Dairy Festival in Newberry,
S.C., Kristal and her mother
were approached by talent scout
and producer, Mrs. Brackett,
who invited Kristal to an all-
expense paid performing vaca-
tion in Bedford. Kristal states
that she was overwhelmed with
Bedford and all the co-
performers from the southeast
that she had the opportunity to
perform with.

In a related matter, the board
approved a four-day work week
for summer employees in an ef-
fort to conserve energy. Davis
. said employees would still be re-
quired to work 40 hours a week.
In other personnel matters,
the board approved the retire-
ment of Mrs. Lina T. Owens at
the junior high, Mrs. Edith F.
Bridges at West and Mrs. Leon
Patterson, a secretary in the
Central office. The board
granted a maternity leave exten-
sion for Yvonne S. Brinkman
and a maternity leave for Donna
Thrift beginning May 2.

better,” she says. “We have the

ing experience and the con-
fidence that comes. with that.”
