June 23, 1983 OBITURRIES CLAUD BARRETT SHELBY - Claud VanBuren Barrett, 50, of 1307 South Post Road, died Sunday from injuries sustained in an automobile acci- dent. : A Kings Mountain native, he was the son of Biddie Elizabeth Gladden Barrett of Kings Moun- tain and the late Charles V. Bar- rett. He was employed as a salesman for Carter Chevrolet and was a member of Putnam Memorial Baptist Church and the American Legion. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War. - : . Services were conducted Tues- day at 3 p.m. at Putnam Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. Larry Morris and Dr. Ernest Arnold. Burial was in Cleveland Memorial Park. WISTAR WALKER GASTONIA - Wistar Garrett Walker, 68, of 2903 Imperial Drive, died Thursday at Gaston Memorial Hospital. He was a retired textile sales representative with Seabrook Inc. of Gastonia. He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II and a member of First United Methodist Church. He was the son of the late Rev. John Martin and Alice Jackson Walker. He is survived by his wife, Viola Black Walker; a son, Wistar Garrett Walker Jr. of Morganton; a daughter, Mrs. Lynn W. Clyde Collins and the Rev. Ralph Reed. Burial was in Gaston Memorial Park. GERTIE BRIGGS ROCK HILL, S.C. - Gertie Briggs, 72, of 330 Charlotte Avenue, died Tuesday. She was the daughter of the late A.P. and Viola Mabry Briggs, and was a member of Central United Methodist Church, Kings Mountain, She was a retired beautician. She is survived by several cousins. Services will be conducted Fri- day at 11 a.m. at Harris Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Ivan Stephens. Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery. . A.G. CARROLL SR. DOVER, DEL. - Alexander Goforth Carroll Sr., 45, of Dover, Delaware, died recently. A native of Gaffney, S.C., he was the son of Brenton and Lillie Mae Carroll of Blacksburg, S.C. He was educated in the Blacksburg School System and was employed by the U.S. Civil Service as assistant fire chief of the Dover Air Force Base fire department. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 21 years and ICE CREAM East Gold Street Wesleyan Church will sponsor a homemade ice cream sale Satur- day from 6-8 p.m. in the church parking lot in front of the American Legion. Peach, vanilla, chocolate, cherry, pineapple and banana ice cream will be sold for 50 cents per cup. Proceeds will go toward starting a new senior youth group and missions. KIWANIS CLUB Ken Koontz, WBTV Com- munity Affairs Director, will speak on “How to be a Good Neighbor’> at Thursday’s meeting of the Kings Mountain Kiwanis Club at the Holiday Inn. Vote AGAINST July 19 Positive Action League retired in 1979 as a Technical Sergeant. He received several awards for service rendered the Air Force. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Boonruam; three sons, A.G. Carroll Jr. of the U.S. Navy in Charleston, S.C., Patrick Keith Carroll of Blacksburg, S.C., and Bamrung Carroll of Dover; two daughters, Lisa and Puttachart Carroll of Dover; one brother, Brenton Lee Carroll of Blacksburg, S.C.; and two grandchildren, Alexander Carroll III and Aaron G. Carroll of Charleston, S.C. Services were held June 5 at Dover Air Force Base Chapel II. Burial was in Lakeside Cemetery in Dover, De. GUILFORD WILSON DREXEL - Guilford Lee “Gil” Wilson, 55, died Thursday at his home. An Iredell County native, he was the son of the late Parlie E. and Nannie Weathers Wilson. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Kings Moun- tain and the American Legion. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He is survived by three brohters, Charlie W. Wilson of Valdese, Olin D. Wilson of Asheville and Melvin C. Wilson of Kernersville; four sisters, Mrs. William Stoner of Drexel, Mrs. Elsie Gamble of Hickory, and Mrs. E.B. Cooke and Mrs. Bill Hullender of Kings Mountain. Services were conducted ‘Saturday at 11 a.m. at Kirksey Funeral Home in Morganton by the Rev. Wilbur Honeycutt. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery in Valdese. VELMA BOLIN Velma Caveny Bolin, 69, of Route 4, Kings Mountain, died Wednesday at Kings Mountain Hospital. A Cherokee County, S.C., native, she was the daughter of the late John Lester and Nora Spurling Caveny. Her husband was the late Walter Jackson Bolin. She was a member of the Kings Mountain Church of God. Nh She is survived by one son, Gary Bolin of Kings Mountain; four daughters, Mrs. Ethel Nor- man, Mrs. Marie Page, Mrs. Maybelle Strange and Mrs. Nan- cy Holmes, all of Kings Moun- tain; four brothers, Marvin Caveny, Luther Caveny, Robert Caveny and Harlen Caveny, all of Kings Mountain; four sisters, Mrs. Bertie Hamm, Mrs: Lillian Spearman, Mrs. Evelyn Graham, all of Kings Mountain, and Mrs. Letha Sheppard of Grover; and six grandchildren. Services were conducted Fri- day at 4 p.m. at the Kings Moun- tain Church of God by the Rev. Kenneth Looney and the Rev. Claude White. Burial was in Mountain Rest Cemetery.
