BRITISH, GERMANS - Students in Mrs. Roxanna Gaffney’s room represented the countries
of England and Germany in last week's “Christmas Around the World” program at North
School. Left to right are Shaun Grier and Mark Ross (England) and Tammy Tesseneer and
Matt Rikard (Germany). The custom of having a Christmas tree started in Germany. Legend
has it that the evergreen tree was chosen by the Christ Child as a symbol of Christmas. In
Germany, people decorate their trees on Christmas Eve. In England, on the night before
Christmas, Father Christmas slips into the house and fills the stockings with treats.
