Deaton Pitches No-Hitter Mountain Junior High’s baseball team and righthander Monte Deaton opened their season on a highly successful note Thursday after- noon. Deaton hurled a no-hitter and struck out 14 batters in a 2-0 victory over non-conference foe West Lincoln. The Patriots are scheduled to play at Chase Thursday in a Western N.C. Junior High Athletic Association contest. Deaton faced only 23 batters in the seven-inning contest. West Lincoln’s only two baserunners gained life on errors. Kings Mountain collected four hits with Tommy Chap- man, Toby Deaton, Brent Bagwell and Monte Deaton get- ting one apiece. Kevin Bolin and Timmy Adams scored the KM runs. Morgan, a 43-year-old produc- tion manager, used a shad rat lure to catch his fish off rocky points. Ben Lee of Cayce, S.C. was a double winner. He placed second with 18 pounds, 9 ounces of fish, but he caught only three keepers. Lee, a 33-year-old health department employee, caught the biggest bass of the tournament. It weighed 12 pounds, 12 ounces, and was caught on a Bill Norman fire tiger lure. Cayce won $1,368 for catching the biggest bass, and $2,250 for placing second in the tournament. Third place went to Frank Jennings of Albemarle, N.C. His seven fish weighed 18 pounds, five ounces and earned Jennings $1,125. Jennings, 47, is vice president of a textile firm. Terry Ray Parker, 29, of Marion, N.C., placed fourth with seven fish weighing 17 pounds, 12 ounces. He won $510. Bill Grier of Mt. Holly, N.C., was fifth with six fish weighing 17 pounds, = eight ounces. He won $407. Grier placed 30th in the Red Man All American Bass Championship last year. All Red Man tournaments follow the “catch and release” philosophy. Anglers receive ex- tra points for each bass that’s returned live to the water. Last year more than 90 percent of the fish caught were released alive. The Carolina Division is one of 15 geographical divisions that make up the Red Man Tourna- ment Trail. The Red Man events are designed for “working man” anglers. Entry fees for the one- day events are $50, with 100 per- cent of the entries paid back as cash awards along the trail. The second of six Carolina Blanton Fishing Winner Richard Blanton caught fish weighing 27 pounds and 12 ounces to win the Cleveland County Bass Tournament last weekend at Lake Murray, S.C. Second place went to Clayton Wright with a total catch of 13 pounds, five ounces. He also caught the biggest fish, a seven pound, six-ounce bass. Rick Lamountain was third with a catch of nine pounds, eight ounces. The club’s April tournament will be at Lake Wylie. Baseball Tryouts Scheduled Tryouts and draft will be held Friday from 6-8 p.m. and Satur- day from 1-3 p.m. at the Deal Street ballfield (behind the Com- munity Center) for all nine and 10 year olds who are planning to participate in the summer Minor League baseball program.
