Thursday. May 10. 1984-KINGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Page 11A
Hutchings: KM Rescue Doing Best
From Page 1-A
Rescue Squad to discuss the mat-
ter. Hutchins said that many
names on the petition are from
outside the Oak Grove area and
some of those are names of
children.
Hutchins said that at the
specific incident recently in
which Mrs. Ellis claimed there
was inadequate response there
was not an EMT to dispatch but
that a Rescue Squad member
went to the scene. The Shelby
Rescue Squad EMT was then
called to the scene, he said. Hut-
chins said that KM has only ll
EMT volunteers, the fewest
EMTs of any of the county’s five
squads. He said the three paid
employees, who work during the
day,were not on duty. Barry
Dellinger was recovering from
surgery, Roy Hanna was in a
Charlotte hospital with his
father-indaw and Russell Falls
was on crutches. Responding to
the charge that donations come
from the public, Hutchins said
that only $85 had been donated
this year and $50 came from a
squad member’s family. He said
that squads receive 25 cents per
mile for each transport of a pa-
tient.
Hutchins said that Mrs. Ellis ex-
pressed the concern that the
Squad had not responded quick-
ly to calls from the Oak Grove
area. She had been listening to
the scanner,she told him during
a telephone conversation this
week. Hutchins says that
volunteers come from their
homes at all hours of the night
and that no one is on duty at the
Squad Headquarters during
evening hours. Calls are handled
by a dispatcher at the Police
Department and an ambulance
is summoned. Hutchins also sid
that some of the Oak Grove peti-
tioners told him they were under
the impression that the petition
was to go directly to the Rescue
Squad.“They told me they
wanted to get us more support
from the county commission.”
“We need more volunteers
badly and good, qualified people.
We also need more input from
the community and community
support,” he added.

BOB INMAN
WBTV’s news anchor, Bob In-
man, will visit Kings Mountain
for his “Hometown Carolina”
feature Thursday.
If weather permits, Bob and
his camera crew will fly to Kings
Mountain on “Sky 3”, WBTV’s
helicopter. At 3:30, they will be
located on Main Street in
downtown Kings Mountain,
where Bob will be meeting and
greeting local townspeople.
The feature will be seen Tues.,
May 15 on WBTV’s 6 o'clock
news.
Inman is visiting Carolina
towns and cities to meet the peo-
ple who live in them, to discover
what issues they are concerned
with, and to learn what’s good
about their hometown.
each morning, lands on the side
of the house and begins hammer-
ing away. Is there any way to rid
myself of the bird and the
damage it’s doing without harm-
ing it?
ANSWER: Woodpeckers are
generally attracted to building
for two reasons: to forage for in-
sects that sometimes infest wood
widing, and to use the buildings
as substitutes for hollow trees to
sound out their territories during
the mating and nesting season.
Non-lethal controls include
treating wood siding for insect
infestations, covering holes or
“starts” with sheet metal or wire
as soon as they are detected, and
deadening sound by placing pad-
ding behind drumming sites.
Visual repellents such as rubber
snakes, hawk silhouettes and
aluminum strips placed near
drumming sites are sometimes ef-
fective in scaring the birds away.
Woodpeckers are federally
protected migratory birds and
can be killed only after a federal
permit has been obtained, even if
caught damaging a house.
