Shaw Gibby Winner
Of McGinnis Scholarship
Shawn Kent Gibby, 17, senior
student at Kings Mountain
Senior High School, is the reci-
pient of the Dr. Paul H. McGin-
nis,Jr. Memorial Scholarship for
$1,000.
Gibby, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Charles R. Smith of 1206 Nor-
thwoods, has been accepted at
N. C. State University in
Raleigh. He plans to major in
nuclear engineering.
Gibby has an outstanding
record at Kings Mountain Senior
High School where he ranks
seventh in this year’s graduating
class. His activities include
membership in the Beta Club,
Student Council, Key Club, Red
Cross Club, Pep Club, and Na-
tional Honor Society. He is a
former member of the French
club and Science club. He was in
the Top Ten in the 10th grade

and served as a junior marshal.

Lander College Graduate
Cynthia Renee Laughter,
daughter of the Rev. and Mrs.
Jerry Laughter, former residents
of Kings Mountain, graduated
from Lander College in Green-
woo0d,S.C. on May 5th.
Miss Laughter earned her
Bachelor of Arts degree Cum
Laude in Sociology. She
graduated with honors and was a
member of the Blue Key Honor
Fraternity, the Alpha Chi Honor
Society and a member of the
Sigma Iota Chi Sorority.
In addition to her studies, she
has tutored for two years in
Spanish and Sociology. She will
continue her studies at the
University of South Carolina
where she has already been ac-
cepted in the Master’s Program.
Miss Laughter plans to do her
graduate work and earn a
Master’s degree in Social Work
and Counseling.

Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow
Laughter and Mr. and Mrs.
Charles Floyd Williams, all
former residents of Kings Moun-
tain.
Melody Moore Presents
Graduate Recital
Mrs. Melody Moore of Cary,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lamar
Owensby of Goldsboro,
presented her graduate recital
on Saturday evening, May Sth,
at 7 p.m. in Hill Hall Auditorium
at Meredith College in Raleigh.
Mrs. Moore is a music student
of Donna Deese.
The Owensbys are former
residents of Grover.
For her program, her selec-
tions included works by Antonia
Vivaldi, Joseph Haydn, Hugh
Wolf, Francis Poulenc, and John
Alden Carpenter. Her accom-
panists were Chris Mehrens,
Eleanor Kinnard, both violinists,
Margaret Pooler, viola, Kathy
Peters, cello, and Bobbie Kesler,
pianist.

fulfillment of the Master of
Music degree.

Students.” He has a part-time
job at Weiener King and is an ac-
tive member of Faith Baptist
Church.
This scholaship is awarded by
Dr. Paul H. McGinnis, Jr.’s fami-
ly.Dr. McGinnis was graduated
from Kings Mountain High
School and received his B.S. ,
Master’s and Ph. D degrees all in
chemical engineering from N.C.
State University. For over 20
years Dr. McGinnis was
employed in the field of
engineering. He died suddenly
on May 28, 1983 in Baton
Rouge,La. His family has electd
to honor his memory by awar-
ding a $1,000 scholarship to a
Kings Mountain High senior
with preference given to poten-
tial students at N. C. State
University majoring in engineer-
ing.
Legion
Program
Slated
Mrs. Margaret Dover, Poppy
Chairman, will present the pro-
gram on the time-honored poppy
at Tuesday night’s meeting of
the American Legion Auxiliary
at 7:30 p.m. at the American
Legion Building.
Because of a number of con-
flicts with the Thursday meeting
dates, the Auxiliary members
voted last month to change the
date of the regular meeting to
the third Tuesday night in each
month.
Poppy Day will be conducted
on Thursday and Friday, May
24 and 25, when Unit members
will be in the business district in-
viting * citizens to wear a
memorial poppy in honor of the
living and in memory of war
- dead. Monies derived from the
_ distribution of poppies are used
for the Unit’s Veterans and
Children and Youth programs.
Unit President Ruth Ruff will
preside at the meeting. Plans will
be made by the group for the in-
stallation of new officers at the
June meeting and the Unit’s at-
tendance at the state convention
in Winston Salem.
Banquet
Scheduled
United Methodist Women will
sponsor a Mother-Daughter-
Guest Banquet on Monday ,May
14th at 7 p.m. in the Fellowship
Hall of Central United
Methodist Church.
Dinner will be prepared and
served by the Methodist Men at
cost of $4.25.
