To Be Peacemakers, Work For Peace
by CHARLES DAVENPORT
Long Creek
Presbyterian Church
The vast cemetery here at
Long Creek Presbyterian
Church contains the graves of
American war dead from all our
nations wars. (1780-present). We
mark our times and history by
these vilent interludes of armed
conflict. They have forever
shaped the history and character
of our nation. May 30th has
been set aside to remember those
who gave themselves for the
cause of nation, freedom, and
human dignity.
Most wars are fought with the
premise that they will be the last
ones. World War I was called
“the war to end all wars.” No

Meeting held in Fellowship Hall Behind The Church
one dreamed a second
catastrophic war would follow it
by just 20 years. Our country
has always waged war for what
it believed to be just causes. We
have fought for freedom and
human dignity. If these ends
could ever be truly achieved, all
wars could end.
Isaiah, in his Old Testament
book, speaks of a day that is free
of armed conflict. He describes it
as a time that swords shall be
fashioned garden hoes. The
natural enemies of nature shall
exist side by side and eat a com-
mon food, instead of each other.
The child shall roam unharmed
in the wilds of nature. This is a
time of peace in which all wars
have ended.
Memorial Day is a day to
remember all those who have
given their lives in hopes of this
warless age. It is also a time to
look to the future age promised
by God - the age of eternal
peace. In memory of those who
have given themselves in the
cause of peace, we are called to
work for peace on our age and
long for the eternal peace of
God.
One important work for peace
in our age is to accept the per-
sonal peace that God offers in
our own lives. The relationship
we find as we meet Christ in a
personal way grants deep inner
peace. As we give ourselves to
the “Prince of Peace,” we come
to understand that the world
"does not turn around our feel-
ings. We learn to win by losing,
gain by giving, conquer by lov-
ing. Peace on a world scale must
begin within the lives of God’s
children.
Another important effort, we
as individuals can make for
world peace is prayer. The
witness of scripture and our per-
sonal experience affirm the state-
ment “prayer changes things.”
Prayers for peace can change the
attitudes and actions of world
leaders. They can begin the rule
of the “Prince of Peace” in the
hearts and lives of men. Special
seasons of prayer for world
peace are helpful in causing us to
focus on the issue.
Finally, if we are to take
- Memorial Day seriously we must
“work for peace. Jesus’ Sermon
of the Mount calls us to take the
matter of peacemaking seriously.
Matthew records “Blessed are
the peacemakers, for they shall
be called the Son’s of God.”
Jesus not only talked about
peace in his age, he went about
making it. He helped people
make peace with themselves and
with God. Jesus also made peace
with the Samaritans, the natural
enemies of the Jews. It is this
mandate for peacemaking that
we are called to live out in our
age.
To be peacemakers we must
work for peace. We must take
positive steps to make our world
a less violent place. There are as
many ways to work for peace as
there are people. Some have
chosen to oppose the develop-
ment of nuclear arms and call for
a freeze of all existing nuclear
arms. Other groups have begun
to attack the root causes of
unrest in the world. They have
launched educational and food
relief programs in the “third
world.” Still others have sought
to promote world understanding,
by assembling the worlds natural
enemies together on peaceful
ground for discussion and inter-
change. The approaches to
world peace are endless, but if
we are truly peacemakers, we
must be involved in them at
some level.
On this Memorial Day, let us
remember those who have given
their lives for the cause of peace
and freedom. Let us remember
them actively as we work at be-
ing peacemakers in our violent
world. Let us work for peace
over against the day when all
wars shall end and the “Prince of
Peace” shall reign forever and
forever.
