According to Bud Medlin of the Kings Mountain Post Office, who is probably our town’s biggest sports fan, Oklahoma football coach Barry Switzer must have had a big help- ing of crow. All week prior to the Sooners’ Orange Bowl game with Washington, Switzer told the press how he thought his team should be ranked number one. “If he had spent half as much time preparing his team for Washington as he did making a plea for number one, Oklahoma might have won the Orange Bowl,” Medlin said. Washington defeated the Sooners 28-17 for the Orange Bowl crown and unbeaten Brigham Young was voted the national championship. Washington finished second. RONALD FRANKS A number of Kings Mountain runners competed in the annual Charlotte Observer Marathon Saturday. Top finisher among the local entries was Ronald Franks who placed 277th with a time of 3:34.56. Year Stewart’s Slants By Gary Stewart Two area football standouts—end Terry Whisnant of Cherryville and quarterback Mark Young of South Point-have been named to the WBTV All-State football team...South Point basketball standout, Teresa Bowlin, has committed to play for Furman’s Lady Paladins next fall. N.C. State’s basketball team may be missing 6-9 Craig Washburn, who has been suspended from the team pending the outcome of a court case against him, but the Wolfpack’s main problem this year is in the backcourt. With their guards, they’re not likely to go far. Kings Mountain High basketball fans will see one of the best basket- ball teams in North Carolina next Tuesday night when R-S Central’s Hilltoppers come to town for a Southwestern 3-A Conference showdown with the Mountaineers. Many observers feel like this year’s R-S team, which is tall and quick, is better than the 1980-81 team which featured Vincent Hamilton and won the State 3-A title. Would you believe that former WSOC-TV sports director, Bill Curry, known better in these parts as the “Mouth of the South”, is now a preacher? Curry is out of a sportscasting job for the first time in years and preaches without pay at a small chapel in Pittsburgh. Grapplers Whip Chase Kings Mountain High’s ‘wrestlers spotted Chase a quick 15-0 lead and then came back for a 47-28 victory! ‘in’ a Southwestern 3-A Conference match Monday night at Chase. The victory improved Kings Mountain’s record to 3-1 in the SWC and 5-2 overall. The Mountaineers travel to West Lincoln tonight to face the state’s 11th ranked team and return home Monday to battle Shelby in a conference match. Two KM grapplers turned in quick pins Monday night. Roderick Boyce stopped Jay Godwin in 25 seconds in the 155-pound match and Farris Turner whipped Steve Motley in 28 seconds in the 119-pound bout. Turner has a 9-2 record and Boyce is 12-2 and leads the team in pins with 10. Vince Sullens of the Moun- taineers remained undefeated at ~ 145 pounds with a 46-second pin over Norman Perry. Sophomore Daron Hillman remained unbeaten at 138 pounds with a - first period pin over Mike Chap- man. He is 70 at 138 and 7-1 overall, having lost his only match when he wrestled in a higher weight class. Dale Smart ran his record to 11-3 in the 132-pound division with a 23-8 superior decison over Mike Bucker of Chase, who had finished second to Smart’s third in the recent Cleveland Invita- tional Tournament. Patriots Still Unbeaten, Face Sullivan Again Kings Mountain Junior High’s wrestlers won two mat- ches last week to run their record to 40 in the Western Junior High Athletic Association and 8-0 overall. The Patriots defeated Shelby 60-18 in a non-conference match Monday to give Coach Phil Weathers his 70th career victory and whipped Burns 60-18 in a conference match Wednesday to take over sole possession of first place. KM is now a game ahead of Burns and Crest who are tied for second with 3-1 records. The victory over Burns was highlighted by co-captain Daron Schenck’s eight-second victory in the 126-pound match. Schenck’s win was the quickest in history of KMJH wrestling. The schedule gets tougher now for the Patriots who are closing in on their 10th straight Western Association champion- ship. They travel to Rock Hill, S.C., Monday for a rematch with national power Sullivan Junior High, and on Wednesday of next week they host Shelby in their final conference match. “Overall, I'm pleased with the way the team has performed,” Coach Weathers said. “John Turner, Bradley Henderson and Wayne Brazzell wrestled well in both matches last week and they’ve been consistent all year for us.” SHELBY MATCH 78 - Tracy Sullens (KM) won by forfeit; 88 - John Turner (KM) pinned Chris Cloninger: 98 - Dan Pearson (S) pinned Tony Parker: 105 - Keena Jones (S) pinned Johnny Na- tions; 112 - Jimmy Sanders (KM) pinned Greg Holman; 119 - Ricky Ross (S) pinned Lyn Goddard; 126 - Daron Turn To Page 4-B Young’s Pin Clinches Victory Over Crest Jarvis Young's first period pin "over Mike McSwain insured Kings Mountain High’s 41-30 victory over Crest in a Southwestern 3-A Conference wrestling match Thursday night at the KMHS gym. The Mountaineers travel to West Lincoln Thursday night to face the state’s 1l1th-ranked prep team, and return home Monday to face Shelby in another con- ference match.
