Patriots Lose First, Beat Sullivan Again
Kings Mountain Junior
High’s wrestlers dropped their
first match of the season
Wednesday at Lincolnton,
39-27, but came back strong
Monday to defeat powerful
Sullivan Junior High of Rock
Hill for the second time this
year, 34-32, in a match held at
Rock Hill.
The Patriots were scheduled
to face Shelby Wednesday after-
noon in their final conference
match of the year. They travel to
Hudson Monday for a non-
conference bout.
*Coach Phil Weathers said his
men didn’t wrestle well at Lin-
colnton but gave the Lincolnton
team a lot of credit. “We were
flat, but they were ready for us,”
he said. “They have a good team
and wrestled well.”
Weathers said Kings Moun-
tain dropped several matches
that could have gone either way
“and a victory in any of them
would have given us a shot at
winning,” he said.
Against Sullivan, the Patriots
were an entirely different team,
becoming the first team ever to

13-and-
whip the Sullivan team twice in
the same year. Earlier this year,
Kings Mountain snapped a
74-match winning streak by the
Rock Hill school.
“It was a nice win for us,
especially at their home site,”
said Weathers. “We were
prepared for them and they were
up for us because we beat them
earlier. Some of our wrestlers
ended up wrestling some guys
that they didn’t face in the first
match, but they really came
through.”

The match see-sawed most of
the way. Sullivan jumped out to
a quick 50 lead but Kings
Mountain came back with a pin
by John Turner in the 90-pound
bout to lead 6-5. The Patriots
clinched the win when Bradley
Henderson recorded a pin in the
169-pound match.
“I’m really proud of the team
for winning this match,” said
Weathers. “It was an important
win for us going into our final
conference match against
Shelby.”
