Track Team Opens Thursday
} ;
Kings Mountain High's boys track
team will open its season Thursday at
3:30 p.m. at East Gaston against the
host Warriors, South Point and North
Gaston.
First-year head coach John Goforth
hopes to see his team be competitive in
the always-tough Southwestern 3-A
Conference this year, and today’s meet
will give him a good indication as to
how tough the Mountaineers will be
since East Gaston is always one of the
teams to beat.
“I just don’t know what other people
have,” says Goforth who came here
last fall from Florida. ‘We're going to
have some experience and will be
strong in the field events and fairly
strong in the distance events. Our
whole year hinges on the relays and
short sprints. If we can score well
there, we will do real well.”
One thing working in the Moun-
taineers favor is that they have a lot of
men on the team this year. Last year’s
team dwindled to nine men at the end
of the year and the Mounties still
finished fourth in the SWC.
Top returnees are All-Conference
standouts Monte Huffstetler and John
Foster. Huffstetler ran the 1600 meters
last year but will run the 800 this year.
Foster should rank among the best in
the SWC in the 3200 meters.
In the hurdles, Goforth expects good
things from sophomore Aubrey
Hollifield; and Calvin Stephens, Thern-
don Brown and Keith Pettus will make
the Mountaineers competitive in the
shot and discus. Stephens, a junior,
won the conference in both of those
events last year.
Eddie Blanton and Tony Moore look
good in the high jump and Otis Brooks
will be competitive in the long jump
and triple jump. Mike Grier will be
strong in the 100 and Ronnie Frazier
‘and Junior Melton will compete in the
400. Sprinters include Jerry Currence,
Jerard McClary, Andre Edwards, An-
dre Byers, Ben Lockhart and Derek
Spann. Distance runners include Scott
Barnes, Steve Lineberry, Patrick
Hamrick and Matthew Bradshaw, and
nian Thompson returns in the pole
vault.
The Mountaineers will not have a
home meet this year but will face all of
the tough SWC teams in away meets
and tournaments. The Mounties will
compete in the Crest Invitational on’
April 11, the Shelby Invitational on
April 18 and the Cleveland County
Meet at Crest on April 25. The SWC
meet is scheduled for May 2 at North
Gaston.
