— RT hn ‘Angela Jenkins, Student Winners Honored On April 16, the Gaston Soil and Water Conservation District honored Lori Britt, Helen Howard, and Edie Bridges at a dinner meeting for honors received in the Conservation Poster and Public Speaking Contests. On March 23, the first place county winners in the Public Speaking, Poster, and Essay Contests, competed on the Area Level at Rowan Technical College in Salisbury, N.C. The Area Level consists of these 11 counties: Cleveland, Lincoln, Gaston, Mecklenburg, Union, Stanley, Cabarrus, Rowan, Davidson, Davie, and Iredell. Seventh grader, Edie Bridges of Bessemer City Junior High, was first place winner in the Public Speaking com- petition. Fifth grader, of Gardner Park Elementary, took first place honors in the Poster Contest competition; and fourth grader, Helen Howard of Gaston Day School, received 1st runner- up honors in the Poster com- petition. Edie Bridges and Lori Britt will go on to com- pete on the State Level. This competition will be held in Raleigh. The 1st place win- ners of the State Level com- petition will receive a $100.00 Savings Bond. The following students par- ticipated in the County Public Speaking Contest: Besemer City Junior High, ith grade: Edie Bridges, Angela Jenkins, Amy Parker, Carol Whidden; 8th grade: Tammy Rinck, and Dawn Smith. Holbrook Junior High, 7th grade: Bahzin Nehta, Rebec- ca Outlaw; 8th grade: Jon Axtell, Kristen Benton, Joan Borchardt, Susan Ervin, and Garnett Smith. Stanley Junior High, 8th grade: Clay Dunsmore. First place winner in the county competition for the 7th grade was Edie Bridges, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed- dy Bridges of Kings Moun- tain. First place winner in the county competition for the 8th grade was Susan Ervin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Ervin of Stanley. Other county winners were: 7th grade: 2nd place- Bessemer City; 3rd place-Carol Whid- den, Bessemer City; Honorable Mention-Amy Parker, Bessemer City. 8th grade: 2nd place-Joan Borchardt, Holbrook; 3rd place-Dawn Smith, Bessemer City; Honorable Mention- Tammy Rinck, Bessemer Ci- fyi The county Essay winners were: 1st place-Matthew Scates, Bessemer City; 2nd place- Stacey Coleman, Chapel Grove; 3rd place-Dee Dee Herron, Gardner Park; Honorable Mention-Carol Foley, Gardner Park. The county Poster winners were: 4th grade: 1st place-Helen Howard, Gaston Day; 2nd place- Tony Mclntire, Cramerton; 3rd-Chip Higby, Cramerton; Honorable ' Mention-Todd Burton, Kiser. 5th grade: 1st place-Lori S. Britt, Gardner Park; 2nd place-Blair Foster, Gardner Park; 3rd place- -David Nelson, Gardner Park- Honorable Mention-Hunter Jones, Warlick. 6th ‘grade: 1st place-Matt Putnam, Chapel Grove; 2nd place-Rhonda Cole, Gardner Park, 3rd place-Becca Layton, Robinson Elemen- tary; Honorable Mention- Pam Hull, Gardner Park. All County winners receiv- ed trophies presented by the Conservation District to their school principals. An Awards Ceremony will be held at each school for their award presentations. This year’s theme for the contests was: ‘‘Soil and Water. . .Yours for Life”. The four different blood types were distinguisher by an Austrian patholo- gist, Karl Landersteiner.
