Rev. Calhoun Returns
To KM To Start Church
Rev. Jim Calhoun, 49, who
lived in the Craftspun village
23 years ago, has returned to
his own community and
established Full Gospel
Praise Center across the road
from his former residence at
216 N. Linwood.
Calhoun, who has con-
ducted tent crusades in
various states and most
recently in California, said
the Lord has led him to rent
the large building across
from Anvil Knit and open it
on Friday and Saturday even-
ings at 7 for non-
denominational fellowship
and on Sunday morning at 11
a.m.
“For seven years I rode
with a motorcycle gang, did
drugs and alcohol, and doc-
tors told me I'd never walk
again. I have a story to tell
young and old alike that God
saves, that God heals, and
that God still performs
miracles in Kings
Mountain,’ he said this week.
Calhoun and his wife hope
to form a ‘coffee shop” at
some point in their new
ministry for Kings Mountain
area young people in the
church building which is cen-
trally heated and centrall
cooled. First Baptist Churc
and Masters Funeral Home
have loaned the ‘‘fellowship
of believers” 200 chairs for
their new congregation and
Calhoun has contributed his
own organ for the music por-
tion of the services. Pews and
a piano are badly needed
items, said Calhoun, who
would welcome any gifts of
pews and a piano from chur-
ches who may have these ex-

"REV. JIM CALHOUN
for seven years during his
30’s and got his life messed up
with drugs and alcohol. But
God turned his life around
and he recently ministered at
the Hughes Aircraft Factory
in Long Beach, California to
four prayer groups formed
there at the noon hour in four
different buildings in the
huge operation. He has seen
many people turn away from
sin and to God, and some of
his friends who became
Christians were former
atheists and Buddhists. One
of his “adopted sons in the
faith’ was Hai-Tram, a Bud-
dhist from Vietnam, who
worked for him in the con-
tracting business, wore a tee
shirt that said ‘‘Jesus Loves
Me” but didn’t know who
Jesus was. Hai-Tram was
saved in the minister’s living
room.
Calhoun said the Lord led
him to Kings Mountain to
form a church and pointed
out the building for him. ‘“We
had hoped to build on an acre
of land near my parents in
Waco”, said Calhoun, and
were out riding two weeks
ago and saw this vacant
building with a ‘for rent”
sign on it in the Craftspun
area. “I told my wife The
Lord had a plan for us in

pastor, his wife, Marlene,
and their nine-year-old
daughter, Kimberly, now live
on North Drive in Cher-

Calhoun’s first pastorate
was a tent in his backyard at
the corner of Third and Fair-
view Street 23 years ago. He
went on the preach and
evangelize in the two
Carolinas, Delaware,
Florida, Pennsylvania, and
California and returned to
this area on June 28th. He
was born and reared in
Gastonia, attended Lowell
High and East Coast Bible
College in Charlotte.
Full Gospel Praise Center
is not the traditional church
but Calhoun believes that
anyone who attends a service
will receive a blessing. “I
have seen healings and
miracles performed in these
services and we plan to have
gospel singing, gospel
preashing and gifts of the
pirit open to all faiths,
creeds and color. He calls his
church non-denominational
and a fellowship body of
believers where worshipers
are free in the spirit and
liberated to praise the Lord.
Healing services and
testimonials, guest speakers,
and gospel singers will be
featured in the services, all
open to the public.
Calhoun conducts Voice of
Praise Gospel Time on Radio
Station WKMT on Saturday
mornings at 11 a.m. He and
his wife will visit door-to-door
in the Craftspun area next
week to invite former
neighbors to attend the new
Praise Center.

Dr. Gary D. Chapman,
Associate Pastor of Calvary
Baptist Church in Winston
Salem since 1971 and Direc-
tor of Marriage and Family
Life Consultants, Inc., will be
evangelist for revival ser-
vices beginning Sunday at
Macedonia Baptist Church.
He will preach at the 11
a.m. worship hour on Sunda
and at 7 p.m. Sunday throug
Wedneseny evenings. A
nursery will be provided and
special music will be
featured during the series of
services.
Dr. Chapman is a graduate
of Moody Bible Institute,
Wheaton College, Wake
Forest University and
Southwestern Baptist
Theological Seminary and
completed a t-graduate
studies at UNC-G and Duke
University.
At Calvary Baptist Church,
Dr. Chapman leads the single
adult ministry and is respon-
sible for adult education,
counseling and pastoral care.
He came to Calvary from
Salem Baptist Church in
Winston Salem, where he
served as Associate Pastor
with similar responsibilities,
including directing the
church-owned camp each
summer from 1967-70. He
served as pastor of
Salisbury’s Emmanuel Bap-
tist Church from 1963-64. He
is author of the book ‘ ‘Toward
A Growing Marriage”.
He is married to the former
Karolyn Butts of China Grove
son, Derek, 14.
