Mote, 63, of Route 3, sustained head injuries and City Policeman Mike Sanders, 35, was treated for minor injuries at Kings Mountain Hospital Tuesday night after a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of King and Battleground. State Trooper J.D. Dunn said that Sanders, operating a 1984 model police car which was totaled, was enroute to back up another officer, Ptl. Jimmy West, who was in pur- suit of a speeding motor- cyclist in the Northwoods sec- tion of the city about 10:06 p.m. Sanders, on routine patrol, was traveling East on King Street with blue light and siren on, according to the patrolman’s report. Mote, operating a 1971 Chevrolet, was traveling south on Bat- tleground Avenue with the traffic light green in his direction, entered the in- tersection and was struck by the police car. According to Trooper Dunn, Mote said that he heard a siren ‘‘but didn’t know where it was.” Dunn charged Mote with failure to stop for blue light and siren. Sanders was not charged. The police car was estimated to be traveling 50 miles per hour and the Mote vehicle was traveling 30 miles per hour, according to the Highway Patrol report.
