graduated from the two-wee
North Carolina Department
of Labor Mine Safety and
Health Institute.
North Carolina Labor Com-
missioner John C.Brooks
commended the US Gypsum
Company for sending Ricky
Ray Martin to the institute.
“Institute attendance,”
Brooks said, ‘‘qualifies the
worker to frain his fellow
miners in good mine safety
and health procedures.
“US Gypsum Company
shows their concern for
employee health and safety
by sending one of their
employees to the institute for
training,’”’ Brooks said.
The institute, now in its
eighth year of operation,
trains workers in the state’s
minerals industry in all
aspects of mine safety and
health. These people then can
conduct training at their
work places.
The institute is held annual-
ly at Rowan Technical In-
stitute. Approximately 10-15
miners attend the two-week
session. They receive instruc-
tion on mine safety regula-
tions, first aid training,
education and training
techniques and other course
work.
The institute is taught by
the safety representatives of
the Labor Department’s Divi-
sion of Mine and Quarry. In
addition to conducting this in-
stitute, the division offers
direct health and safety
training for mining opera-
tions too small to send an
employee to the institute.
