physician. Since many condi-
tions of the upper digestive
tract cannot be diagnosed by
x-ray, the new Sasizoscope is
helpful in diagnosing inflam-
mation of the esophagus,
stomach and small intestine
and, also, in identifying the
site of upper gastrointestinal
bleeding. The procedure —
called EGD — may detect
early cancers too small to be
seen by x-ray. If the doctor
sees a suspicious area, he can
pass an instrument through
the scope and take a small
piece of tissue for laboratory
examination.
Each of the these scopes
has another valuable feature.
A polaroid camera can be at-
tached, enabling the physi-
cian to document specific
areas for future comparison
and diagnosis. Kings Moun-
tain Hospital has recently
replaced a smaller camera
with a state-of-the-art
camera for use with the new
scopes. ;
Pat Thompson, Kings
Mountain Hospital
Gastrointestinal ASsistant, is
a specially trained nurse who
assists the doctor with the ex-
amination. ‘I really love my
work,” said Mrs. Thompson,
“because I know we’re help-
ing so many people. And, I
think it’s great that we’ve ad-
ded these new instruments to
our Endoscopy
Department!”
Hospital administrator
Huitt Reep commented on the
new instruments by saying:
“We’re committed to having
available the very latest in
technology for our patients
and physicians as we do our
best to meet the increasing
healthcare needs of our com-
munity.”
Kings Mountain Hospital is
a 102-bed, modern acute care
facility, with a medical staff
of 26 active physicians,
covering al major
specialities.
