Their defensive starters are huge. They have good speed in their linebackers and secondary. We’ll have to block much harder and longer.” ; The Bulldogs run a pro set on offense which is led by sophomore quarterback Tim Gilbert, who is a good runner and passer. The Bulldogs have averaged passing about 16 times a game so far. Senior Kenny Walker also plays a lot at quarterback. A host of returnees and some promising newcomers give the Bulldogs one of the best backfields in the con- ference. Senior Durwin Briscoe is a three-year starter at running back and the Bulldogs have had one of the leading rushers in the conference thus far in junior halfback Danny Ross. ‘‘Ross has exceptional speed,” says Hicks, ‘and they have a couple others who are big and fast. They do a lot of things well on offense. Our defensive front really has its work cut out.” Hicks said the Bulldogs run a lot of mis-direction plays and quick pitches out of their pro set. “They try to catch the defense lining up wrong,’’ he said. ‘““We have our work cut out for us.” The Mountaineers have played outstanding defense all year except in the lop- sided loss to Hunter Huss. In their four victories, they recorded two shutouts (42-0 over East Lincoln and 27-0 over Chase) and held their other two opponents to just one touchdown (17-7 over Bessemer City and 14-7 over Shelby). In last week’s win over Chase, the defense scored two touchdowns and set up a third.
