EMS System Doesn’t Work
An Open Letter To Citizens Of Kings Mountain:
Do you know that you are being deprived of emergency
medical care because of reasons known about only to a cer-
tain few?
Lately we have heard about how good the paid EMS system
is and how we need paramedic level service and how Rescue
squads should only be back-up.
There used to be two EMS units during the day stationed at
Kings Mountain Hospital. After 5 p.m. one unit was on duty.
Now, due to increased calls in Shelby, one of the units was
sent to Shelby. When the remaining unit goes out-of-town, the
Kings Mountain Rescue Squad is to be put on standby to cover
the district. This is a good system when EMS wants to i it.
—-Sn Marcial at 10:45 a.m. EMS unit was sent out-of-town to
helby. A Shelby EMS Unit was sent to Buffalo Creek to stand
by. Kings Mountain Rescue Squad was not asked to be on
standby. Who did this benefit? Not Kings Mountain residents.
If a call came in, the unit at Buffalo Creek would get the call,
not Kings Mountain Rescue Squad. Also, a call in Shelby for
the Unit at Buffalo Creek was held to enable it to remain near
the Kings Mountain District.
Kings Mountain Rescue Squad has stood by at least 30
times this month for EMS. The KMRS is glad to do this as it
believes in service to its residents to give them the best care
available. I might add that KMRS does not charge for its
calls, where EMS does. I don’t think money is the factor. I
believe this incident and others are being done to hide flaws in
an all-paid system that has been touted in some circles as the
greatest thing since ice cream.
For an hour or more Tuesday, less than the best possible
care was given to Kings Mountain residents. Why did the
supervisor of EMS not want the KMRS to stand by?
This and other similar occurances should make you, the
citizen, worry and our governing body wonder about the
management and operation of the EMS System. Finally, at 12
noon Tuesday, KMRS was notified that EMS was out-of-town.
If the basic EMS system does not work, how can a
paramedic level service work any better?
