Roberts, 1944 graduate of Bethware High School, was awarded the doc- tor of humanities degree Saturday during graduation ceremonies at Gardner-Webb College. He also delivered the graduation address. Roberts is editor and business manager of the Bap- tist Courier, the weekly news magazine of the South Carolina Baptist Convention. A native of Shelby and son of John E. and Annie Spake Roberts, Roberts grew up in the El Bethel Community near Kings Mountain. Gardner-Webb bestowed the honorary degree upon Roberts in recognition of his meritorious ac- complishments during a 33-year career in religious journalism. From 1954-60 Roberts was director of public relations at Gardner- Webb College, from 1960-66 he was editor of Charity and Children, the monthly publication of the Baptist JOHN ROBERTS Children’s Home of North Carolina, and since 1966 he has been editor of the Baptist Courier. In addition, he has served as a member of the advisory board of the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and as a member of the Baptist World Alliance Commission’s committees on human rights, communica- tions, and Christian teaching and training. Two South Carolina col- leges have distinguished Roberts with honorary degrees. Furman University conferred upon him the doc- tor of laws degree in 1972 and Baptist College at Charleston the doctor of literature degree in 1971. Roberts earned the associate of arts degree from Gardner-Webb, the bachelor of arts degree from Furman and the master of arts degree from George Peabody Col- lege of Vanderbilt Universi- ty. In awarding the_doctor of humanites degree, vice- president Dr. John R. Drayer paid tribute to Roberts’ ex- emplary service to his alma mater. Roberts has served Gardner-Webb as faculty member, member of the Board of Advisors and the Ministerial Board, chairman of the Parents’ Council, presi- dent of the Alumni Associa- tion, and winner of the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1965. During World War II, Roberts served with distinc- tion with the U.S. Army in the Pacific, winning six medals and commendations. Roberts is married to the former Helen Goodwin of Greenville, S.C., and they are parents of six children, Wayne, Mark, Glenn and Jill Roberts, Jonna Hamrick and Julie Freeman. Ollis Earns B.A. In Music Clayton Lloyd Ollis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter C. Ollis of Rhodes Avenue, Kings Mountain, received a B.A. in Music during commence- ment exercises at Mars Hill College Sunday afternoon. Mars Hill president Dr. Fred B. Bentley presented diplomas to 230 graduates. Primary speaker for the ceremony was Dr. J. Wesley Grayson of Laguna Hills, Ca., Mars Hill’s most generous benefactor. Dr. Grayson, along with his wife, the former Polly Wall of Mars Hill, established the Grayson Scholarship, a full-tuition grant that is the college’s most prestigious.
