GROVER SCHOOL BOARD OF 1956—Pictured with Grover Principal Jim Scruggs, second

day to lunch with the Principal and to be honored with engraved plaques. From left, Bill Camp,

1956 School Board Honored
School board members who
served before school con-
solidation on the Grover
School Board took a nostalgic
tour of Grover School and got
a few surprises Thursday at
the invitation of Principal
Jim Scruggs.
Scruggs, who came to
Grover as principal in 1956
from Burlington where he
was teaching and coaching at
Walter Williams High, in-
vited the men who hired him
31 years ago to have lunch at
the school. He surprised them
with engraved plaques and
then took them on a tour of
the school building. For some
of the former board members
it was their first trip back to
school since they served on
the 1956 board.
“They were pleasantly sur-
prised with the changes and
improvements on campus,’
said Scruggs, who said the
new computer lab and the
new kindergarten building
brought expressions of
delight from his visitors and
former bosses.
Returning to school were
Glenn Rountree, who made
the initial call to Jim Scruggs
in 1956 with an offer of the
Grover principalship, Bill
Camp, who is now a member
of the Grover town board,
Frank Royster and Stough
Wright. The fifth member of
the board, Broadus Mat-
thews, is deceased.
