NR Miniseries delves into Lincoln’s personal life Sam Waterston portrays President Lincoln By Mary Ann Townsend Steeped in fact, but tinged with the author’s imagination, Gore Vidal’s Lincoln, airing Sunday and Monday, March 27 and 28, on NBC, looks at the human side of this country’s 16th president. Academy Award nominee Sam Wa- terston portrays Abraham Lincoln, whose presidency was beset by the Civil War and a corrupt administra- tion, and Mary Tyler Moore plays his emotionally unstable wife, Mary Todd Lincoln. Waterston and Moore, who have worked together previously on two projects (Just Between Friends and HBO’s Finnegan Begin Again), found a special familiarity while working together on Lincoln. Since Gore Vidal’s Lincoln focuses on the domestic side of the Lincolns more than past accounts, this version required a comfortable and believable relationship between Lincoln and his wife. “This Abraham Lincoln and this Mary Todd Lincoln are both witty people, and you see the humor in this Abraham Lincoln far more than any other that I had ever seen,” Moore said. “There hasn’t been that much about Mary Todd put on film or tape, but she was a wickedly acerbic, witty woman and that was fun to play.” Waterston reluctantly described this interpretation of the president as “high principle and low cunning.” In this version, he explained, Lincoln must contend with a bubbling, vile under- current of corruption in his adminis- tration, as well as misfortunes in his personal life. He is not seen as strong as he typically is portrayed. The actor said he had always wanted to portray Lincoln since his own height and slimness matched that of the president. In fact, his resemblance to Abraham Lincoln caused several unu- sual incidents during the filming. MARY TYLER MOORE plays troubled Mary Todd Lincoln in Gore Vidal’s Lincoln, Sunday and Monday on NBC. streets of Richmond, Va., where filming took place, he drew a crowd. Often the onlookers were after more than just autographs, some wanted to engage in political discussion. The actor recalled how he was challenged by one of the historians who was on the set to ensure authenticity. “During the staging of the Battle of Antietam, he cornered me and said, ‘If you were really the man you are pretending to be, I'd be the man who’d want to shoot you.’ I had done a lot of research and I immediately brought up all of Lincoln’s arguments -- which were great -- and he backed down.” While Waterston’s physical char- acteristics were similar to those of Lincoln, making Moore resemble Mary Todd Lincoln produced more challenges. Known for bringing a good deal of body language and smiles to her acting, Moore had to alter these traits for Gore Vidal’s Lincoln. “I smile broadly and I use my body and my hands. I found very quickly that that doesn’t wash in that period because women were not just corseted and gusseted physically,” she said. “That also applied to the way they conducted themselves.” 6:30 @ Nightly Business Report 7:00 @ Nightly Business Report B® This Week in Motor Sports Weekly highlights including NAS- CAR, CART, IMSA, and Motocross.
