Vickie L. Boyce, 34, of 209 Parrish drive, order for arrest probation viola- tion, $5,000 bond, secured. Charles Eugene Ford, 46, of 816 Fourth St., felony count discharging fircarms into occupied property, $5000 bond, unsecured. Larry Joc Morrison, 42, of 49 Chesterficld Apt., possession of alco- holic beverage on city property, cita- tion. Steven Gregory Daves, 33, of Route 2 Mode Road, Mooresboro, DWI and carrying concealed weapon, $400 bond, unsecured. Eric Anthony Yates, 47, of 401 E. Parker St., stop light violation and DWI, $300 bond, secured. Carla Humphries Degree, 25, of 109 Wave Rd., one count assault on officer, $500 bond, secured. A 16-year-old man was charged in the same incident with drunk and disruptive, resist, delay and obstruct officer in line of duty and assault on law enforcement officer. His $1,000 bond was secured. Trial date for both is June 25. INCIDENTS © Clyde Huffman, 405 Pinehurst Dr., reported that his house was broken into and vandals took a VCR, answering machine, jambox, camera, walkie talkie, shotgun and baseball cards val- ued at $895 and damaged the house $300. William James Jennings, 1416 Merrimount, reported that vandals broke out a double window and dam- aged lights on a light pole in his yard. Cheryl Denise Pruitt, 102 E. King St., reported theft of a $339 federal in- come tax check from her mailbox. Pamela Conner Ham, 218 Walker St., reported that vandals damaged her 1989 Ford in the employee parking lot at Fredrickson Motor Express. Charles Hyslop, 108 Peak Drive, re- ported theft of a state license plate GUEST COLUMN ® Warren Goforth Crime facts By WARREN GOFORTH KM Police Chief Some facts and figures to ponder about crime in the United States: +There was one violent crime every 19 seconds in the U.S. in 1989. +American households sustained 35.8 million criminal victimization in 1988 of which 5.9 million were violent crimes--robbery, assault, rape and murder. +Assaults are the most common form of violent crime. Forty per- cent of murders of women are at- tributed to domestic violence and assault, +In 1989, there was one forcible rape every 6 minutes. Seven to 10% of all adult rape victims were male. FBI states 2,000 women are raped and report it each day and estimates for each of these, 10 to 15 more rapes are committed and not reported. +In 1989, there was one murder every 24 minutes. Of the 18,954 homicides committed, about 11.4% involved persons 55 years or older. +With the South leading by a 6% increase, the Northeast and the Midwest by 4% and the West with 1%, the 1989 U. S.murder rate was 9 per 100,000 inhabitants. +The average elapsed time for arrest, to conviction, to sentencing for murder cases required about 10 months for disposition. + I n 1989, more than 30,000 people in America died as a result of gunfire. +Firearms were used in approxi- mately 3 of every 5 murders in the U. S. Every day, 35,000 children bring their guns to school. Every 36 minutes, a child is killed or in- jured by a gun. +"Weekly Reader" surveyed fourth-to-sixth graders: 93% be- lieved cocaine or crack is a drug; only 45% called alcohol a drug. Together, drug and alcohol abuse cost the u. S. economy at lest $177 million annually. Federal, State and local governments spend $61 bil- lion in fiscal 1988 for civil and criminal justice, increasing 34% since 1985. +In 1988, an estimated 23,351 persons died in traffic crashes, the greatest single cause of death for persons aged 5 to 32, with more than half being alcohol related. +In 1988, there were 177 fewer local jails in operation than 5 ycars carlicr, but the jail populations were larger +During 1988, an estimated 1.52% of all adults in the U. Tonda Ware, 502 S. 11th St., Bessemer: City, reported that her 1989 Nissan was damaged by vandals doing $300 damage to the door., Wesley Davis, SA Kingswood Apt., reported an attempted break-in. A rear window of the house was damaged. Eddic Jerry Ruff Jr., 316 Wilson Terrace, reported the theft Tuesday morning of his 1988 white Chevy Camaro and a $1,000 sound system in- side the vehicle. Eric Conrad, 102-A, E. King St., re- ported that a storm window and screen on his house were pried open. Robert Hovis, Route 3 Long Creek Church Road, reported theft of a tag from his car parked at Harris Teeter Parking lot. Comfort Inn, 720 York Road, re- ported that vandals damaged one of the rooms and took a remote control unit from a television set. Rick's Ole Country Store, Cherryville Road, reported damage to an ice machine and three soft drink machines by vandals shooting a .22 or .25 caliber weapon doing over $1,000 damage. Aaron Conner,1725 Shelby Road, reported that vandals cut the tires on his 1983 Datsun. Marion Edge, 808 E. Ridge St., re- ported theft of an automobile tag. Linwood Pantry, 511 Linwood Road, reported that an intoxicated man came into the store to buy food items and beer. When the clerk refused to sell him beer he started throwing food items and objects at the clerk doing $1,000 damage to a sliding glass door on an ice cream cooler. Damages were estimated at $150. The man fled the scene before police arrived. Angela Boulware, 817 Church St., reported that someone poured red and white paint on her 1985 Toyota van and broke the rear windshield wiper and radio antennae doing $2,000 dam- age. WRECKS MARCH 25 Virginia Falls Hardin, 801 Meadowbrook, operating a 1986 Ford, told officers she was reaching to get something from her purse and bumped a car in front of her at the drive- through window at First Carolina Federal Savings Bank. The other driver was identified as Martha S. Shipman, 1205 Shelby Road, operating a 1985 Toyota. No damages were reported. MARCH 27 Margaret Herndon Kirk, of 505 Crescent Hill Road, told KMPD that a hit and run driver struck her car in the parking lot at Harris Teeter doing $250. damage. MARCH 28 Sgt. Raymond Garris said a 1989 Ford truck operated by Jackie Eugene Comer, of 3459 Hoodtown Road, Cheraw, S. C., hit a 1973 Chevrolet truck operated by James Douglas Dingus, 312 Cleveland Ave., Grover, on Highway 161 doing $5500 damage. Dingus was making a left turn when the accident occurred. MARCH 31 Rufus Frank Webster, of 103 Wells Street, was injured when he ran his 1986 Toyota truck through a gate, down a set of concrete bleachers and onto the old City Stadium football field. Webster reportedly told Ptl. Charles Bundrick that "God told me to do it." Webster's vehicle knocked down iron handrails and damaged the con- crete steps that led to the field. Damage to the stadium was estimated at $1,000. Damage to Webster's truck was esti- mated at $2,500. Webster was treated at the hospital and released. MARCH 31 Sgt. Derek Johnson and Ptl. Jeff Funderburke charged Kenneth Lee Truesdale, 39, of Route 2 River Road, Lincolnton, with DWI, speeding to al- Iude arrest, failure to stop for blue light and siren, reckless driving, traffic light violation, no insurance and fictitious tag. Police said Trusedale was travel- ing East on Mountain Street on a Harley Davidson motorcycle at speeds up to 100 m.p.h. Officers said Trusedale was wearing a helmet which came off. Truesdale escaped injuries. APRIL 1 A 1990 Subaru station wagon oper- ated by Catherine B. Hunt, of 114 Whetstine Road, went out of control at 803 4th Street and hit a car motor in the driveway of the home of Margaret Dellinger, went over a cinder block wall and struck the house. The house was damaged $300 and the motor, owned by Anthony Scott Bolin of Fairview St, was damaged $300, police said. Mrs. Hunt said the vehicle had almost stopped when she entered the driveway. Shirley Owens Hamrick, of 308 S. Oriental Ave., said her 1988 Chevy truck was bumped by a hit and run driver at Tammy's Seafood parking area. Man dies from wreck injuries A Kings Mountain man died Saturday at 3:22 p.m. in the emergency room at Cleveland Memorail Hospital from injuries he received in a wreck. Talmadge Coran Duncan, 57, of 305 Parker Street, traveling west on Oak Grove Road abou 2:20 p.m. Saturday, lost control of his truck and struck a tree on Oak Grove Road, according to the N. C. Highway Patrol. Duncan's 1982 Datsun had an esti- mated $2,500 in damage. CHURCH SOFTBALL-An or- ganizational meeting to form church softball teams will be held Thursday night at 7 p.m. at KM Community Center. Churches are invited to send representatives to the meeting. Nominees sought by FmHA Eligible farmers in Cleveland County are invited to become nom- inces for the Farmers Home Administration (FmHA) county committce, FmHA County Supervisor, Gertrude Ledbetter an- nounced today. As a result of the 1985 Farm Bill, two of the three members of . FmHA county committees must be clected. The third member is desig- nated by FmHA. The Cleveland County Committee assists the FmHA county office in detcrmin- ing the cligibility of applicants for certain types of FmHA loans. Generally, farmers whose princi- pal farming operation is in Cleveland County, are eligible to become nominees for the FmHA county committee. "Farmers in this county serving on the commitlee, play an important role by assisting in the process of loan applications and reviews," said Gertrude Ledbetter. For this clection, onc member will be clected for a term of three years. Nominating petitions must be re- turncd to the FmHA Cleveland County office by May 1, 1991.
