School Board By BEN LEDBETTER Staff Writer The Kings Mountain Board of Education met to discuss its goals for the new year which are expected to be passed at its August meeting. School board members settled on five points to con- sider at a special meeting Monday night. One of the goal possibili- ties was to achieve expected growth or better on state tests. “I'd like for that to be the first one,” School Board Chairman Shearra Miller said. Board member Jerry Blanton suggested adding a part about advancing the workforce development pro- gram at the high school. Currently the school sys- tem approved plans for pur- chasing the Lambeth Rope property across from the high school. Giving more recognition to students achieving high on vocational tests was also mentioned. Forming a committee to suggest technical goals was suggested by board member Terry McClain. While settling on current goals: to be considered, School Board Vice Chairman Stella Putnam suggested removing character educa- tion as a goal for next year. Communication was another possible goal dis- cussed during the Monday meeting. discusses goals for 2002-03 Previously, the board approved creating a commu- nity relations position but those plans have been put on hold. One way of increasing communication was updat- ing school websites, Board member Mike Smith said. “We could put a lot of stuff on those web sites,” he said. “There’s so much we're not taking advantage of.” Miller said she would like to see more of the system's positive news communicat- ed while Smith said he would like to see the board be more responsive to citi- Zen concerns. “Personally, I don’t think we've been to responsive to public concerns since I've been on the board,” he said. Smith said a lot of positive WATER EVERYWHERE - There's no shortage of water on the Kings Mountain High baseball field where an underground sprinkler system keeps the field in excellent playing condi- tion.
