Eagles Among Us
by JIM FEREBEE
8th in a series
Roger K. Miller was born
in Shelby in 1955 and grew
up in Belwood, NC. He
joined troop 413 in 1966.
His troop was very short
lived lasting from just be-
fore he joined until just after
he earned his Eagle Award.
Because of the nature and
tenure of his troop Roger
served as its Senior Patrol
Leader (SPL) during all of
its existence. In addition
to being SPL, he served as
Scribe and Bugler.
Roger attended scout
camp at the old Bud Schielde
Scout Reservation in Tryon.
At that period in scouting,
troops could attend camp
with only boy leaders pres-
ent. Roger remembers
having to disarm a scout
who had cut one of his fel-
low scouts with a machete
and having the offender
sent home. In addition to
summer camp he attended
a week of SPL training in
Statesville.
Roger earned and was
awarded his Eagle in 1971.
In this effort he earned 21
merit badges.
After finishing high
school Roger attended UNC
Chapel Hill earning a BA
in Chemistry in 1977 and a
Doctorate of Dental Science
in 1982. He has practiced
Dentistry in Kings Mountain
for the past 30 year.
He is married and has two
children, Kristen and Daniel.
Daniel also has earned his
Eagle Scout award. While
Daniel was in the troop,
‘Roger was involved as a
Troop Committee member
doing Boards of Review and
serving as an outing leader
occasionally. He got to par-
ticipate as an adult leader on
a 10 day trek at Philmont
Scout Ranch in Cimarron,
New Mexico.
Roger accepted Christ
as his savior at 10 years of
age at Carpenter’s Grove
Baptist Church. His mem-
bership is at First Baptist
Church, Kings Mountain.
He has served a deacon, a
SS teacher, served on vari-
ous committees and sang in
choir.
From an early age music
has been an important part of
his life. In addition to being
a trumpeter he is a very
accomplished pianist. At
ROGER MILLER
many BSA Courts of Honor
he has played preludes and
offertories. Recently Roger
has used his talent playing
at senior centers and nursing
homes.
Roger fondly recalls
his time as a scout and as a
leader. The skills he learned
have stood him in good
stead. He feels that the val-
ues he embraced as a boy
from the Scout Oath and
Law have been guiding prin-
ciples in his life.
