It is very heartening, at this time, that we have a President who has the courage to stand by the recommendations made in a report by a competent committee • yvhich spent many months study ing facts, assimuiating data and arriving at the opinions and con clusions contained in the report to the President. In the opinion of this writer, nothing has occurred ! within the last 50 years, by any Presidential recommendation, that even approaches in importance, the concept of and stand upon human and civil rights as shown by the ' committee and President Truman. It is high time for Negroes to ig nore traditional party lines and vole into office men of opinions and men with the will to act in the interest of the expansion of brotherhood and equality among men. While the world today stag gers under the impact of national unrest and great international con fusion, it is indeed refreshing to find a leader of a great nation "VOULL KHOW WHEN YOU'RE K. L. C. and son and grand daughter of the writer, Dr. H. T. Medford, also of Washington, were engaged to hold the Holy Week service at Harris Memorial A. M, E. Zion Church, Bristol, 'Va. It is re ported reliably that the services were largely attended and enjoyed. Many rededicated themselves to ihe church, and there were some conversions. Rev. Medford is con sidered by many as one of the coming young ministers of the A. M. E. Zion Cluircli and Mrs. Dyer, a sweet and effective soloist of the classics as well as of Gospel songs. When the week’s service ended, the pastor of the church, Rev. J. Julian Robinson and mem bers were unanimous in praise of the minister and Mrs. Dyer. Visiting EYiends Dr. and Mrs. Algernon Hiliiary Fisher of North Carolina were pleasing visitors at the office of The Missionary Secretary during the month of March. Dr. F’isher is the highly successful pastor of Williams Chapel A. M. E. Zion Church, Williamston, N. C. Mrs. Fisher is a teadier in tlie public school system in Elizabeth City, N. C. Dr. Fisher recently preached the Anniversary sermon of the 75th AnniverstTry of the founding ol the Harris A. M. E. Zion Church, Harrisburg, Pa. It will be remem bered that during Dr. Fisher’s administration and pastorate of the above named church, he was suc cessful in liquidating a 20 year heavy debt on the church and par sonage in 18 months. Both he and Mrs. Fisher were warmly received by the citizens of Harrisburg. Rev. Fisher is the son of Dr. R. Farley Fisher, General Secretary ot the A. M. E. Zion Church. Accompany ing Dr. and Mrs. Fisher on the mo tor trip to Harrisburg were Dr. and Mrs. G. Raymond Griffin of Elizabeth City, N. C. Dr. Griffin is the popular pastor of the St. Johns Baptist Church, Columbia, 'N. C. Mrs. Griffin is a nurse in the ' office of a local physician. Washington, one of our greatest Americans, still live is evidenced by the fact that one of the gradu ates during iliis administration, Mrs. P. V. Waddell, of Cliesnee. S. C. stresses industrial education and vself help. Mrs. Waddell is also in terested in the development of the Negro race and has tieen a de vout advocate of the HARRIS HERALD and will do more in the future. More about Mrs. Waddell and her progressive husband, Dr. Waddell, in another issue. Attention was called to the fact ill our last issue that three Ne groes were called for jury ser vice in Laurel, Miss. The first ones to serve in that town for forty years. “Strange as it seems” this writer has never known about any Negro serving on the jury in Rutherford county, a reminder that after all, many Negroes in Mississ ippi arc doing better than wc are. THE MONTH FROM PAGE ONE ideals of the late Dr. Booker T, CLYDE CAMP, SUPERINTEN DENT of Jercsulcm Sunday School is not only a valuable and depend able church worker, but he is al so doing a fine job toward creat ing interest in TIIF, HARRIS HERALD and everything for the uplift of Negroes in Western North Carolina. Ninety per cent of these fires, it is estimated, were caused by just overage men, women, and children, who live near forests, work in them, or enjoy thorn for hunting, camping, and fishing. Most of them ore started in the Spring when the call of the out doors is strong, and winds are high. ^ In our Piedmont Carolinas . . . favored by Nature with unusually fine timbcriands . . . let's do our part to preserve this wonderful gift.
