"Cook one for your self and boil an egg for me,” Garden Time Two All-American Rose Selections Announced By M. E. GARDNER N. C. State University The two All-America Rose Selections for 1972 are APOLLO and PORTRAIT, both hybrid teas. They have been through the grind of two years of testing in the 22 gardens of All- America Rose Selections scattered about the United States. This spring they will be available in all sec tions of the country as either bare root or container-grown plants, and should be appearing In rose show competition this fall. Apollo is a very free blooming, soft, sunrise yellow, producing long stemmed buds and flowers on a hardy, vig orous, well-formed plant. A distinctive feature Is the long pointed buds of rich yellow, sometimes with a touch of red. They slowly open to large five to sU Inch blooms of a soft, pleasing yellow, again often tinted, or veined, with red, de pending upon the climate and soil conditions. The large blooms of 35 to 40 broad petals have a moderate to strong tea fragrance which adds to the charm of the bloom. The plant Is vigorous, well branched with flowers produceij on long stems. "It Is, without doubt, the freest branch ing, most attractive yellow hybrid now available.” Apollo has better than average resistance to mildew. Is quite free of thorns and Is “well clothed with attractive dark green foliage.” Portrait is a distinc tive. colorful pink hybrid tea. It has masses of beautiful urn-shaped buds of rich pink, opening Into large creamy blooms edged with a deep satiny blush. Occasional gold tones wash the open bloom with added warmth of color while an even pink reverse adds depth and sparkle. More than 50 petals of excellent substance roll back to give a fully double, high centered bloom four to five inches across. An added asset of this winner Is its delightful fragrance that adds greatly to the pleasure this rose has to offer. Portrait grows tall and strong. The vig orous. upright canes branch freely, each hold ing a bright pink bloom. The plant produces continuous quantities of medium large exhibition quality blooms all season. Even' a single plant will supply a color ful display, but three or more should be used to produce a spectacular showing of this variety. Portrait is reported to be especially resistant to black spot (a trouble some fungus disease). It is possible that if this variety is grown alone, and well away from other roses, it might not need spraying. Rugged hardiness and masses of beautiful flowers make Portrait a fine addition to any garden. VOLUNTEERS & DUTY Secretary of the Army Ro bert F. Proehike reports the Army has announced that only volunteers would be ordered to active duty from this year’s graduating Re serve Officers Training Corps cadets. EQUIPMENT REMOVED The Pentagon reports that the United States has re moved 1.8 million tons of military equipment from South Vietnam. The equip ment valued at $4.5-billion will be reconditioned and distributed to Reserve and National Guard components and to forces in the Pacific. THE SAVERS. .
