Lawn mowers have already been busily worUog in our neighborhood levelling off the uneven stands of winter grass. The bum of the mower signals a turn of season and the odor of wild onions pervades the air. We ffl^e a resolution in our family that yard priority num ber one would be er^cat- lon of tbe wild onions which seem to be taHng over our yard. Reluctant to saturate WEEKLY RECIPE by Doris Howie 1 cup creamed style com 2 eggs 1 cap sour cream 1/4 lb. grated long bom cheese 1/2 cup salad oil 1 ctgi com meal 3 tb^, halting powder 1 tsp. salt 1/4 cup diced canned jala- penos (peppers) Beat eggs, add sour cream, oil and com. Add all dry in gredients and mix well. Blend in cheese and peppers. Poor into a greased 10" cast iron skillet. Bake in 425 degree oven for at least 45 minutes or until golden brown. This recipe makes a deliciously sidey com bread which is good served with pinto beans or western style barbecue. This week’s recipe is given to us by Doris Howie, wife of John Howie, who isamarket ing representative for Trans continental Gas Pipeline. John is from Texas where this re cipe also originates. Tbe Howie family cousists of Gary, 9th grader; Mitch, 8tfa grader; Mike, 6th grader, and Susan who is in 4th grade, and they bave lived in Kings Moun tain for nine years. Last month John was elected pre sident of the Kings Mountain Country Club. the area with weed killer, we decided to eliminate the offensive ptantc by 'iigging up each clump, bulb by bulb. Tbe target was one bucket ful! per day for Ray and my self and tbe children would help whenever possible. We seemed to be maMng excellent headway, if tbe site of heap of polled onions was any lirtlcatlnn. However, a glance at tbe backyard reveal ed a mere slight indentatioo in tbe dark green lush shoots. Tbe wet weather last week really impeded our progress and we have not even cleared one tenth of tbe yard. We'll bave to plan our onion battle strategy for tbe faU season Local Births Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Connard, 2110 West 2od St Gastonia, a daughter, March 27, 1972. Meanwhile, they will fall to tbe blades of tbe lawiunower within tbe next few days and digging them up will prove too troublesome. There is one consolatloo, however, tbe onions are green and they blend in well with grass and other broad leafed weeds! I often wonder bow many years wUl elapse before tbe onions take over tbewbole yard? T. Estes. Pastor is Rev. Russell Fitts. HEALTH BEAUTY With tbe arrival of spring you will hear a lot about cutting liquids aixi salt in your diet if you want to lose weight. The reduction of salt in your diet, except under a doctor's care, is foolish and dangerous—very much so dur ing warm weather. Restric tion of liquids is of no use whatever. If you cut down on liquids in a few days you will lose pounds rapidly. However, your weight will go right back up as soon as your thirst causes you to re turn to your normal intake of water. Water is essential to life. You can go without food for weeks, but you die of thirst within a short time. Our bodies are seventy per cent water. If you don’t drink enough iiquid. your body wiil ex tract and retain tbe water you must have from the "solid” foods you eat. This will interfere with elimina tion and other important body processes. Remember cutting down on liquids causes a certain loss of water—not fat. In fact many doctors advise an in creased amount of liquias during a reducing diet. It’s not a pretty story but an immensely moving story of a crime dynasty and the family life of the Corleone family. They're doomed to a lifetime sentence of fear, hiding and looking at tbe world through dimly lighted windows, while at the same time showing strong love and devotion within the family unit. Marlon Brando, as the Corleone patriarch sets the pace of the film although his role is not a large one. His make-up is excellent. Some claim it’s Brando’s best part Asheville and held at tbe Un iversity Center last Monday night Jody and Miss Martha Aon Stone, daughter ot Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Stone of Kings Mountain were vocalists along with four young meD--tbey sang songs by tbe Carpenters in some time. The real scene stealer, however, is young Don Vito Corleone played by A1 Pacino. Pacino, a worthy actor in only his second film, plays the college-educated son who takes over the Corleone business. Excellent char acterizations are given by the entire cast (many of Ital ian background). In plain language it’s a bloody picture—murders and violence—and is rated "R— with persons under 17 not admitted without parent or guardian.” Mrs. Lillian P. G^ of 737 Vale Street, Shelby, N. LOUISA’S LETTER Dear Louisa. A cousin of ours is run ning for election to an of fice in our town and he is against a man who has al ways been a friend of our family. We thought, when they entered the race that it would be a friendly one and just a matter of issues but both of them have started saying bad things about the other and accusing them of all sorts of things. Now ray problem is this; My cousin thinks I should get in the battle and help him gel elected by spreading the same tales he is telling and I am not about to get into this. Do you consider me disloyal to the family as he says I amv Cous in—S.J. Answer: I think a person should always be loyal to his fam ily but that doesn’t include spreading gossip about other people or breaking up life long friendships to help a politician get elected. My a d V i c e to you is to keep quiet, mind your own business and vote for your cousin. Very often we find that the same politicians who are belaboring each other be come firm friends and are working for each other later on. But If you have said det rimental things about the candidate those things are not so easily forgotten by him. Louisa. XJdiesA your letter to Louise. P.O.
