VD On Increase-
Health Dept. Taking
Steps To Curb It
KMHS Students Attend
A Pinkerton security guard (left) at the Pine Manor Apartments, and Cleveland County Sheriff’s
deputies follow the path of three suspects In the Friday morning armed robbery of the Royal Vil
la Motor Inn. Shortly after the incident the three suspects ran past and shoved the guard at the
apartments which are located across the York Road from the motel at 1-85. Looking for tracks
at the site are deputies Cecil Murray, Terry Lanier, and Jim Norman. (Mirror Photo by Lem

The Cleveland County Health
Department announced today
that the high incidence of Ve
nereal Disease continues. The
two most common venereal
diseases are Gonorrhea and
Syphilis. They are transmu
te from an infected person
to other people by either sex
ual relations or close body
contact. In July 52 people
were treated for either active
or suspected VD. This com
pares to approximately 15 peo
ple treated during the same
period last year. In June more
people with VD or suspected
VD (55) were treated than in
any recent year in Cleveland
County. Looking back wo see
that 53 were treated in May,
19 in April, 36 In March, 51
in F ebruary and 43 In Janu
ary. The majority of the pa
tients are in the age grouplS-
24 years with over 5(ft of
them being females.
The Cleveland County Health
Department has diagnostic
and treatment facilities open
from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to any
one who suspects they have a
venereal disease. If there are
questions regarding Venereal
Disease call 487-8511, andask
to speak with our VD repre
sentative.
In order to curb the Increase
in Venereal Disease the Cle
veland County Health Depart
ment has taken several ^eps.
It has trained one member of
the staff in contact interview
ing and epidemiological follow
up of contacts and is perform
ing routine cultures on most
of the fennale patients It ex
amines. They are also en-
"couraging private physicians
in the community to be more
aware of the current VD epi
demic and follow their infect
ed patients epidemiologically.
It is felt, after talking with
several physicians in the cou
nty, that the number of cases
of Venereal Diseases the hea
lth department sees only re
presents the tip of the iceberg.
Although venereal diseases
are reportable diseases to the
Public Health authorities, a
major part of It Is never re
ported.
The North Carolina State
Board of Health has just re
ceived one-half million doll
ars to assist its counties in
the development of Gonorrhea
screening programs. It is an
ticipated that within the next
several months the local hea
lth department will be able to
provide culture media to local
physicians so that more rou
tine screening can be done for
Gonorrhea.
