Page2A KINGS MOUNTAIN MIRROR Thursday, January 10.1974 Commissioner Takes Exception To Bridges^ Editorial To The Editor: As one of the newly elected City Commissioners, I would like to comment on the editorial comments written by Jonas Bridges. First of all I would like to say that from reading this article I got the impression that Mr. Bridges thinks that since we were just elected that we are a bunch of “dummies” thatarereallygoingtomake a mess of things. To this I will reply that we are not com pletely new at serving the public. I have, as many of you know, served in this capacity before, and each of the other commissioners have in the past or presently hold positions or own their own business where they are constantly dealing with the public. Therefore I feel that we know a little about dealing with the people of our city. After all if you will look back to the November election you will find that the people of Kings Mountain put their vote of confidence in us and we will try to the best of our ability and through God's leadership to serve these people. Now as to the subject of Chief McDevitt. As I have stated before, I have nothing against this man and I think that he has done a tremendous job here but since we were elected to serve the people of Kings Mountain we have to sometime forget our personal feelings and listen to the complaints of others. As I see it the responsibility of a Commissioner is to represent the people and when these people come to you and think they have a complaint or that there is a problem within our city government then may I ask you wha t we are suppose to do other than look into it and that is all we have tried to do. I want each citizen to feel that we are interested in them as individuals and in their DToblems and when you have quite a few people who are asking you to check on the same thing then what other choice doyou have but to do so if you are actually interested in the wishes of everyone. I am not and I feel that the majority of the other Com- CLEARANCE SUIT SALE 127 99 99 VALUES 90'”’ to 160*’'* SPECIAL GROUP SUITS REDUCED 40% DOWNTOWN ONLY SPORT COATS 99 TO 99 VALUES 60" to 120" SPECIAL GROUP SLACKS REDUCED 20% MANHAHAN DRESS SHIRTS 3.99 VALUES teM 1.00 LADIES' SPORTSWEAR REDUCED 30 TO 40% nfown A Akan Cantw GASTONIA'N C missioners are not against Mr. McDevitt. Do you not realize that if we had wanted to fire him that we could easily have done this at our first meeting? We held the strings in our hands to pull as we saw fit and I feel that is what happened since he is still our Chief of Police. Now Mr. Bridges may I ask one favor of you? You served your term as Commissioner and showed what you could do now may we have the same opportunity? If you have any comments in the future we would welcome a call or visit from you rather than blasting our administration on the radio and in the newspapers. LLOYD E. DAVIS Ward 2 Commissioner Lions Back Chief Dear Chief McDevitt: This letter is to inform you that a vote of confidence and support in your ability to direct the Kings Mountain Police Department was made at the Tues., Jan. 8, 1974 meeting of the Kings Moun tain Lions Club.
