He received notification from Congressman Jim BroyhilL Reports July 1 Beam Gk)mg •To West Point By JOlINMcGILL Special To The Mirror Tony Beam, senior student at Kings Mountain High, has been appointed to the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. Beam is one of ap proximately 1,300 students appointed to the academy each year. Representative James Broyhill notified Beam of his appointment last Wednesday. Tony, son of Mr. ^and Mrs. Harry Beam of t Grover, will begin at West Point on July 1. 1974. In order to be eligible for the appointment. Beam had to take the Scholastic Aptitude Test, the American College Test, and the Math Level 1 and English Composition Acheivement Tests. He then went to Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C. to take his medical examination. Beam traveled to the U.S. National Guard Armory in Charlotte to take a physical aptitude test. After receiving nominations from Senators Ervin and * ^Helms, and Represenative Broyhill, Tony sent in his seventh semester grades and was notified of his ap pointment shortly thereafter. For his appointment. Beam will receive his four-year educational the United States Military Academy free, and will also receive one-half the base pay of a second lieutenant while at the academy. Upon graduation. Beam will be commissioned as a second lieutenant and will be obligated for five years of service in the military. Tony is Senior class president at Kings Mountain High this year. He is a three- year letterman in golf and has also lettered I in wrestling. Beam is a junior marshal and a member in both honorary societies at the school, the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta. He is listed in the current edition of Who’s Who Among American High School Students and is active in the Science, Monogram, and Key Clubs at the high school. Last summer. Beam at tended Boys’ State held at Wake Forest University. Beam is a member of the First Baptist Church in Grover, where he is chairman of the ushers and president of the youth organization. He is employed by Magnolia Finishing Plant in Blacksburg, S.C. Kings Mountain Man Is Charged By Higlnvay l*atrot A Kings Mountain man was arrested this past week and charged with failure to report an accident, stop sign violation and improper registration following a Friday accident at 3:15 p.m. State Highway Patrolman M.E. Reynolds investigated the matter and reported Allen Gettys James of Rt. 2, Box 359, Kings Mountain was coming out of RP 2233 onto L'S 29 when he passed through the stop sign there and struck the southbound car of Carolyn Davis W'right of Rt. 2, Blacksburg, S.C. According to the trooper’s report, James hit the rear of the Wright auto and continued north, failing to stop. He was arrested Sunday by Reynolds on the three charges.
