Rapid growth is antici

painting a picture of what is
‘happening for my listeners,”
he said. “I also seek more
quality of voice and more
knowledge of sports.”
Joe says he seeks to refrain
from editorializing and
"second-guessing” the coach.
"I don't try to tell the coaches
what to do or the officials what
to call because they sure don't
tell me how to announce a
game,” he smiled.
“Oh, I might say something
like, 'it looked I'ke the ref
might have missed that foul
under the basket,' or
something like that,” he said.
“I can remember in '72
when Huss was playing
somebody in football and I
mentioned that Huss ought to
put the ball in the air more as
they weren't getting anywhere
on the ground.
“The word got back to head
coach Don Saine, then I got the
message,” he said. “But
Don's not only a fine coach
and gentleman, but a good
friend as well."
“But you should tell the
facts. Facts lean big. I don't
try to build a team up or tear
them down, but just try to tell
it like it happens. And being a
former official. I know what a
tremendously tough job they
have to do on the field or
court"
Joe would eventually like to
get on some college network
and air games, and still hold
his job with WCGC. "Ebb
Gantt of our station did it
when he started the Davidson
basketball network," said Joe.
"Ebb Gantt is great to have
as a boss. Ebb went through
the same things I’m going
through and understands
what’s going on"
Joe, who was also briefly
with WYCL in York, S.C., as
news director, said WCGC
emphasizes they are a com
munity station They carry
anything of public service
from the people of the
listening community from the
east coast to the west coast.
"a b Gantt built up this
code of thought,” said Joe,
“and I hope to carry it on.”
