The KM High golfers will travel to River Bend Golf Course in Shelby for a South western Conference match with North Gaston and Crest and Coach Bob Jones’ linksmen will be seeking their second straight victory. Thegoif team hasn’t played a match since March 28 when the Mountaineers defeated Lincolnton and Burns in a SWC match a t Kings Mountain Country Club. They had one match at North Gaston rained out and missed another match in Cherryville because the Mountaineers weren’t advised of a change in the playing date. Others who have performed well for the Mountaineers include Johnny Gamble, Jim Lybrand, Gary and Mitch Howze and Tom Tate. ’The KMHS track team is at Crest thisaftemoon for a meet with the host Chargers, Shelby and Lincolnton. All three of those clubs are perennial toughies in the SWC and will be favored over the Moun taineers. Coach Steve Baker has gotten good performances from Roy Putnam, Jim Thompson, Rusty Cloninger, Tab Bridges and Carl Roseboroas the Mountaineers have finished second in a couple of events. Thompson recently turned in the best time of any SWC trackster in the 100 yard dash, running a 9.9 for a new KMHS record. The KMHS girls tennis team will face its biggest task ever Friday afternoon when it takes on SWC leader Shelby on the road. Ihe Mountainettes have performed wdl in their first year of play but Shelby will be highly favored. Ihe Mountainettes are scheduled to travel to Freedom High in Morganton Tuesday. Terry Holland, who recently resign^ as head basketball coach at Davidson College to accept the same job at the baskctballers Butch Blalock, Kathy Ledford and Santh'a Byers and wrestlers Hal Glass and Ronnie Terry. player awards in both sports, as well as best free throw shooter awards in basketball. Letters, All-Southwestern Conference certificates and senior plaques will also be presented. All-Conference performers University of Virginia, will be who will be recognized include Holland, a 31-year-old Clinton native, no doubt will have a lot to say about his new job at Virginia, where he hopes to make a name for himself and the Cavaliers in the tough Atlantic Coast Conference. A former Davidson eager, Holland coached the Wildcats five years after serving as Lefty Driesell’s top assistant. He was named Southern conference coach of the year three times. Holland is married to the former Ann Johnson of Clinton and is the father of one child, Katie Gray, who was bom last summer. The boys tennis team travels to East Gaston Friday, then return home next Tuesday for a big match with South Point’s Red Raiders. The Mountaineers are also off to a good start, sparked by the likes of Eddie Mauney, Terry Franks, and others. Kings Mountain Junior High opens Tri-County Conference baseball action Friday at Shelby, then plays its first home conference game Monday afternoon at City Stadium. Coach Porter Griggs’ charges won two of three non- conference games, splitting a pair with Mt. Holly and top ping Lowell Holbrook in a single contest. Shelby is regarded as the favorite in the Tri-County loop but KM is also expect^ to give a run for the title in its first year of official junior high play. ’The junior high track team, coached by Steve Moffitt, is host to Lincolnton and Ashley next Wednesday at John Gamble Stadium. Netters Shutout ER 9 0 Kings Mountain’s Moun taineers tightened their grip on second place in the South western Conference tennis race Tuesday at home with an impressive 9-0 victory over East Rutherford. The Mountaineers, who have lost only to defending champion and unbeaten Shelby, now sport a 4-1 record in SWC warfare. The Mounties travel to East Gaston Friday. The KMHS girls go to Shelby today and host R-S Centtal Friday. Kings Mountain won every match in two sets Tuesday and the visiting Cavaliers failed to score a point in three of the nine matches.
