"We have collected m The highest Individual and collective scholastic record of any graduating class In the history of Kings Mountain High was compiled by the class of 1929. Recently, the Class of '29 held Its first reunion. The ceremony was held May 30, 1929 In the Central School auditorium. Twenty-eight of the 30 seniors received diplomas. Chadwick Smith, George Fletcher Ware, Bonnie Mae WeUs and Wilbur Wright. George Ware, serving as master of ceremonies at the Kings Mountain Motor Inn gathering, said, “I don’t know why our class has never had a reunion before. I guess everyone got too busy or strayed too far away. Then, first thing you know It’s (50 years later.” Ware pointed out that besides the scholastic achievement, the class of 1929 was the first graduating class to wear caps and gowns for the ceremony. He said the robes were “gray with white collars.” That class included: Virginia Lee Bird, Stephen Wrlston Car penter, Vlrgle Carroll, Nina Louise Cole, Grace Pauline Cooke, Martha Frances Cornwell, Clarence McCall EUerbe, Vera Rhee Falls, Ruth Janette Gamble, Nell Louise Hayes, Frances Lucille Hord, Joe Beach Hord, Sue Hord, Lloyd Robert Houser, Viola Elizabeth Logan, AUwee Nette McDaniel, Samuel McDaniel, James Pressley McGill, Cleta Faye Mauney, George Wingfield Moss, Charles Clavln Oates, Joe Robert Penland, Myron Rhyne, Class officers were James McGill - president; Myron Rhyne - vice president; Lloyd Houser - secretary; and Wrlston Carpenter - treasurer. The class motto was: ••Not At The Top. But Climbing.” Flower was the rose; colors, pink and white. George Ware presented the school with a set of encyclopedias as the Hazel Lee Settlemyre, Laura Azalee Smith, class gift. Ware said the books were destroyed In a fire in 1933. Twenty-one members of the class attended the SOth reunion. Vlrgle Carroll. Faye Mauney, James P. McGill, Bonnie Wells and Wilbur Wright are deceased. The other four were unable to attend. Oates, Howard Jackson, Virginia Bird Crawford, George W. Moss and Sue Hord Moss, all of Kings Mountain. and Mrs. B.F. Barnes of Lumberton; Mrs. W.T. Weir, Mrs. E.W. Neal and Dr. and Mrs. Nathan Reed of Kings Mountain and Rev. B.F. Orman of Brevard. Barnes was finishing his second year as princlp^~at Kings Mountain High when the class of 1929 graduated. Mrs. Weir was a teacher. Mrs. Oawford called the roll. Miss Falls gave the Invocation and Rev. Or- mand, the benediction. Gospel Sing Special guests were Mr. A Gospel Sing will be held Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Victory Baptist Church on Grover Rd. beginning at 7 p.m. Featured groups will be The Wesley Five and Faith Gospel Singers of Kings Mountain.
