ID’S Fair Features Hell Drivers 'it. t • > • Returning to the Cleveland County Fair for the first time In many years will be the Jack Kochman Hell Drivers show. Performances are scheduled for October 4 and 0 at 8 p.m., and Oc tober 6 at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. Jack Kochman Is often referred to as the "King of the Hell Drivers," a isither unique title since he never drove In an auto thrill show. Kochman, whose Hell Driver show Is seen by more than one million persons every year, plays a different role. He's an organizer, promoter, a showman who runs what Is regarded as the best automotive thrill show In the United States. Kochman first became Involved In the stunt driving profession In 1042 !the year Lucky Teeter, considered stunt driving's answer to baseball's Babe Ruth, was killed In a ramp- A to-ramp Jump). "The guys ^ drove cars with 81-lnch Iron cleated wheels then and during the war we had to alter the cuburetors to run on propane cooking gas," he recalls. "But things are different now and we use only the best equipment. I buy new Dodges every year and the only clunkers you see In the show are the junkers we buy for the crashes and roll-overs," he says. Although most stunts are dangerous because a slight miscalculation on the part of the driver can cause havoc, safety precautions have been developed to give the performers every advantage of the calculated risk they must take. One of the big ad vantages for scheduling Kbchman's team at the fair Is that the show goes on, rain or shine. The show may be altered, such as additional ground loops or wet weather stunts replacing the ramp-to- ramp jump, but It Is never cancelled. Kochman's program at the Cleveland County Fair la scheduled to Include the T-bone crash In which a car leaps from a ramp and dives Into others placed vertically In Its path; the roll over, where the driver sees how many times he can force the vehicle to roll; the high ski, where the drivers travel un believable distances with the car running on only two side wheels; the ramp jump; and a whole series of precision driving tricks. In which the drivers weave a crazy-quilt pattern passing within Inches of each other. The 1970 Cleveland County Fair will open September 28 and continue through October 6.
