Page 6-KINOS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Tuenday, November 13, 197» Close Out Season With 8-2 Record Mocfe, Mounties Maul Lions 27—0 Kings Mountain's Moun taineers closed out one of their most successful football seasons in history Friday night at John Gamble Stadium with a lop sided 27-0 victory over arch rival Shelby. ^The victory gave the Moun taineers a final '/■2 Southwestern 3-A Conference record and 8-2 overall mark. They tied Shelby (7-2 In the SWC and 7-3 overall) for second place In the final standings behind unbeaten South Point. Kevin Mack, KM’s much- heralded senior tailback, had another super night with 288 yards rushing and three touch downs. Mack finished the year with a school record 1,888 yards rushing and also set records for the most yards rushing in a single game (287 against R-S Central) and the longest scoring run from scrimmage (100 yards against R-S). • ^ 'f* ^ ' - '1' ^wr Mack went 60 yards on KM's first play from scrimmage to give the Mounties a quick 7-0 lead, and the Mountaineers continued to pour It on the Lions throughout the contest. The game was more one-sided than the final score Indicated as KM had one 80-yard scoring run by Mack called back, fumbled once In the endzone and was on the Shelby one yard line when the game ended. Mack also had scoring runs of five and 33 yards and quar terback Jeff Clonlnger scored Che other KM touchdown on a one-yard sneak. The Mountaineers, who controlled the ball all night, ran up a 21-0 halftime lead. Mack’s 33-yard run was the only score In the second half as KM was more interested in running the clock out than putting more points on the board. The 27-0 victory was the worst licking a Kings Mountain team had administered the usually- rugged Golden Lions since 1966, when the George Harris-led Mountaineers blanked Shelby by a 26-0 score. Ironically, KMHS assistant coach Bob Jones was a member of that '66 Shelby team. Shelby, whose defense had recorded four shutouts and had given up only 13 points (to South Point) In any one game, was humiliated by a KM offense that racked up 386 yards rushing. It was the fourth straight game the Mounties had gone over the 300 yard rushing mark. The KMHS defense was just as tough as the offense, limiting the Lions to just 38 yards rushing and 44 passing. Shelby passed midfield only twice, once on a pass play on the final play of the first half and again on a 16-yard unsportsmanlike conduct call The Statue of Liberty is revived . . Ooach Dan Brooks of the Mountaineers, needless to say, was overjoyed, as were the players, who gathered at midfield and sang the school song before trotting Into the fieldhouse for the last time. "We played awfully well,” said Brooks. "In fact, we played as good as we could. I’m just sorry the season had to end because we got better every game. I wish the sesison weren’t over so we could reach an even higher peak.” Looking back on the 8-2 season. Brooks said he was plea-sed with the record. "But, we lost the conference our selves,” he said. "We shouM have beaten both Bums and South Point, I hope South Polr^ goes on and wins the sta^e championship.” Brooks said he was pleasantly surprised that the Mounties were able to man-handle Shelby and gave credit to the assistant (Turn to page 7) Moiintaineer Gridgraph MOUNTAINEER GRIDGRAPH First downs Yds.
