• • • • c o i m (» •0 «> 0 Laura Elizabeth Moss Celebrates 6th Birthday Thursday, November 15, 1979-KINOS MOUNTAIN HERALD- Pa^e :! % ' Lee Completes Training Laura Elizabeth Moss, daughter of Linda and Larry Moss of 308 Fulton Dr., celebrated her sixth birthday TTiurs., Nov. 1. She Is granddaughter of Ray and Guy Oliver and the late Forrest and Laura Moss, all of Kings Mountain. Laura is a student In the Kindergarten class of St. Michael’s School in Gastonia where she was honored with a cupcake party Thursday morning. Later In the day, she was Joined by her friends, Phillip Harrelson, Elizabeth Bryant, Jennifer Summey, Request Tabled (Begins on page lA) treasurer before the teacher gets his final check. "I’m Just concerned about more paper work for the teachers," she said. In other action Monday, the board; -t-Amended the minutes of Its April meeting In order to grant 1900 to the Amity Aid Program, Instead of $600 as was originally granted. -I-Approved the following teachers to serve on the newly- organized Reading Council, which will study plans for the operation of the reading program and prepare the materials that will be used In It: Mrs. Doris Wallace, Mrs. Dianna Allen, Mrs. Bess Phifer, Mrs. Sandra Connor, Mrs. Margaret Smith, Mrs. Marie Ballard, Mrs. Carolyn Mitchell, Mrs. Blaine Blggers, Miss Connie Phifer, Mrs. Beulah Carroll, Mrs. Edith Bridges and Mrs. Jackie Hope. Director of Instructor Howard Bryant pointed out that the teachers were elected by their fellow teachers but teachers who are skilled In the reading program were not eligible for election. Teachers Cliff Whit- flfeld and Mrs. Wells questioned the decision to exclude skilled reading teachers and Bryant said the reason was that “we wanted ones who teach basic reading skills." -f-Was told that all the elementary schools in the district had been approved for Southern Association Ac creditation and will receive their membership at the 84th annual meeting of the Association in Atlanta on Dec. 9- 12. Kings Mountain Junior High was not approved because it has some teachers teaching out-of- field. 4-Passed a resolution thanking all teachers who were involved In the accreditation process. 4-Granted leaves of absence to Mrs. Marilyn Cablness and Mrs. Sandra Henderson; em ployed teachers Jeanette Surratt and Hilda Leonard on an Interim basis; and employed non-certifled personnel Lee Blanton, Charlene Roxanna Gaffney, Lynn Griffin, Janice Hamilton, Delcina Moore, Robert Ramsey and William ’Riomburg. 4-Heard a report from Bryant on a science institute he and other school employes attended at the University of Georgia. 4-Was told by Supt. William Davis that he is communicating with several area colleges and universities on the possibility of offering graduate work for local teachers at a local facility. -f-Realeased John Harry and Richard Alan Phillips to the Shelby City Schools and ac cepted Tammy Elder from Shelby and Darrell Burris and Dustin Lee from Gaston County. 4-Approved a policy per mitting high school students to take special courses at Cleveland Tech. -f-Set the December meeting for 12 noon on Mon., Dec. 3. 4-Authorized Supt. Davis to purchase a mobile classroom to serve the vocational department at the high school. SATURDAY DANCE American Legion Post 16S will sponsor a dance Saturday from 8:30 until 12:30 p.m. at the Post Home on York Rd. Dancing will be to the music of "Southern Fever’’ and admission Is $8 per couple. Andrea Mayhew, Brooke Scarborough, Christopher Cheshire, Holly Mercler, Heather Caveny, Eric Hanks, and Chip Hambrlght, for a party at Kate’s Skating Rink In Gastonia. Assisting her parents at the party were Mrs. Janie Summey and Mrs. Sarah Harrelson. ’The children enjoyed cake, chips, colas and balloons in the party rooms and two hours of skating fun. LAURA MOSS Coast Guard Seaman Ap prentice David R. Lee Jr., son of Wilma J. and David R. Lee Sr. of 210 E. Iowa Ave., Bessemer City, N.C., has completed recruit training at the Coast Guard Training Center, Cape May, N.J. During the nine-week training cycle, trainees studied general military subjects designed to prepare them for further academic and. on-the-Job training leading toward their qualification In one of the Coast Guard’s 26 basic occupational fields. Included in their studies were first aid, seamanship. Coast Guard history and regulations, close order drill and damage control. A 1979 graduate of Bessem. r aty High School, he Joined 11 e Coast Guard in July 1979.
