Hamrick family. Mr. Hamrick has a beef cattle farm. He does good grassland management on this farm. The farm family was honored at a Cleveland District Supervisor Meeting and was presented a plaque for* being selected conservation farm fami ly. A conservation fair booth was sponsored by the District at the Bethware Community Fair which is usually held about mid- September each year. The District also sponsored a conser vation booth at the Cleveland County Fair which is usually held the later part of September and first of October. This is a 9-day fair while Bethware usual ly last 4 days. The District Board [irovides conservation booklets for all 6th grade students and teacher’s guides for their teachers for all Cleveland County, Kings Moun tain City, Shelby City and Twelve Oaks Academy schools. The District is usually represented by the Area VIll Spring and Fall Meetings and the State Annual Meeting of the Soil and Water District Super visors. The District Board elects their officers in January or February each year. The officers for this year are Sam Jenkins, Chairman; Cameron Ware, Vice Chairman; Dan Jones, Secretary-Treasurer; Roy D. Dedmon and Robert Don Sweezy, regular members. Paul Davis and John Bridges are Associate Supervisors. Each year the District enters the Goodyear Contest sponsored by the Goodyear Rubter Com pany. Each District who enters this contest includes a copy of their Annual Report and Annual Work Plan along with the Goodyear Score Sheet and other items of information about the District’s work. In March each year the District works with the FFA Land Judging Teams in conduc ting a contest. This year Burns High School placed first in District V1 of nine teams and fourth in the State from 45 teams. The team members were Tim Greene, Gene Terry, Richard Yount, Gary Head and Don C. Elliott, advisor. They were invited to enter the National Federation but decided not to this year since they were a new team. They hope to be able to enter the Na tional Federaion next year. The District participates in Soil Stewardship Week. Soil Stewardship Week is always in May each year. This year Soil Stewardship Week was May 11-18. The theme was The Judg ment of Nature. The District purchased some materials to be used by some of the local chur ches during the week. The booklet used each year is made up of Bible references and about taking care of our natural resources that God has given us to use. A news article on Soil Stewardship was mailed to the local papers and spot an nouncements were mailed to local radio stations. The District reviews the Memorandum of Understan ding, Long Range Program and Annual Work Plan during the year to try to improve and en courage better conservation. About April each year the District starts thinking about ob jectives needed for the new fiscal year which starts on July 1 each year. The District does some work with the local Units of Govern ment in advising good conserva tion measures for some of their projects. The Board members reports on critical areas as they locate them so they may be entered on a map in the field office for fur ther follow-up. The District has worked with some of the schools having ero sion and drainage problems dur ing the year. The supervisors participated in tae RCA Program by review ing slides and voicing their opi nions. Slides on a Soil Survey were reviewed by the District Board of Supervisors and others. These slides showed needs and advan tages for a soil survey. Each year the District spon sors one or two students to at tend the Resource Conservation Workshop at N.C. State Univer sity, Raleigh, N.C. Each county in the state is eligible to sponsor a student. Cleveland Tech, in coopera tion with the Cleveland County Community School Program, will sponsor a typing class at Crest Senior High School begin ning Monday, August 11, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. The 33-hour class will be instructed by Joyce Davis for all levels of typing skills. Persons interested in learn ing to type or to increase their skills should report to room 102 at Crest High School for registra tion. The cost is $5.00 for the en tire course. Rick Pasotto Issues Statement On Draft Rick Pasotto, Libertarian can didate for the U.S. Senate in the November general election, issued this statement on the draft Wednesday. Said the Chariotte buyer for industrial textile supplies, ‘The draft is slavery. It is nothing more than a prelude to conscrip tion. It is involuntary servitude. It has no place in American society. Registration is a major step toward the Vietnam era treatment of America’s youth as cannon fodder.” David Braatz, secretary to the candidate, said that the Liber tarian national committee on Feb. 3 approved resolution op posing any form of compulsory registration for the draft and en dorsing civil disobedience as an appropriate moral and practical means of resisting mandatory registration and the draft Pasotto faces Democratic op position from incumbent Robert Morgan and GOP opposition from John East, neither of whom have indicated they will participate in a debate. Pasotto spoke to Gaston Col lege students recently on cam pus.
