Major activities have been scheduled along the way to help celebrate the Bicentennial of the campaign and battle. Starting things will be Gov. John Dalton of Virginia, who will speak at Abingdon High School on the evening of Sept. 24. A three-day series of activities will take place Sept. 25-27 at Elizabethton, Tenn., and at nearby Sycamore Shoals State Park, site of the meeting of Vandalisms Are Reported City police are investigating several reports of vandalism dur ing the weekend. Robert Marable, of 1708 Nor- thwoods, reported that he ap prehended two juveniles taking a radio antennae from his car which was parked at his residence. The 13-year-old girl and 15-year-old boy were reported to juvenile authorities. Jack Lowman, of Connelly Springs, reported the theft of two helmets from his motorcycle which was parked at Burlington Mill parking lot. The helmets were valued at S90. Soap and toilet tissue were used to mark the cars, according to the police report. Gasoline was stolen from a Cleveland County school bus parked at West School. Carol Johnson of Thornburg Dr. reported that someone took an assortment of jewelry and $20 in money from her home after breaking a window. Edna Hamilton reported that the window in her kitchen was broken at Pine Manor Apart ments. Ron Bagwell, of 323 Somerset Drive, reported the theft of his mailbox. Virginians and Tennesseans. Tennessee Gov. Lamar Alex ander is expected to be present for at least part of the festivities at Elizabethton and the State Park. Former U5. Senator Sam Er vin is to address the marchers when they reach Quaker Meadows in Morganton, N.C., on Sept. 30, to be joined there by contingents from Surry, Wilkes and Caldwell Counties, N.C. Caldwell County marchers will muster at Fort Deflance, 12 miles north of Lenoir, at 2 p.m. on Sept. 28. They will be joined there the next morning by con tingents from Surry and Wilkes Counties. Dramas about the campaign and battle and westward expan sion will be presented ni^tly Sept. 25-27 at Sycamore Shoals State Park. Another drama, “Then Conquer We Must,” will be presented on the evenings of Sept. 26-28 and Oct. 3-7 at Kings Mountain National Military Park. The City of Kings Mountain, in North Carolina just north of the battle site, has an almost non-stop series of activities scheduled from Oct. 3 through Oct. 7. Included among these is a possible address by President Carter at 2 pjn. Oct. 7. Governors Jim Hunt of North Carolina and Richard Riley of South Carolina will meet at the boundary that separates their states near Kings Mountain Na tional Military Park for a tradi tional hand-sahking ceremony. Lt. Gov. Zell Miller will repre sent the State of Georgia during the final day’s activities, and there is a possibility that Ten nessee’s Gov. Alexander will also be able to be on hand. During those ceremonies, the colors of each of the five states that supplied men for the battle will be presented, and a represen tative of the United Kingdom will place a wreath on the grave of Major Ferguson. Retired U.S. Army General William C. Westmoreland, former Army chief of staff, will serve as the honorary chairman of the 200th Anniversary Celebration and will be on hand for many of the events. U.S. Rep. James T. Broyhill, who authored the legislation creating the Overmountain Vic tory National Historic Trail, will serve as the honorary chairman for North Carolina. P. Bradley Morrah, chairman of the South Carolina American Revolution Bicentennial Commission, will represent his state as honorary chairman. Invitations have been issued to singer Dolly Part on of Ten nessee, U.S. Senator John Warner of Virginia and Atlatna attorney Charles Kirbo to serve as honorary chairpersons for their states. It is anticipated that the reenactment of the march of the Overmountain Men, the five days of activities in the City of Kings Mountain, and the pro gram at Kings Mountain Na tional Military Park will attract several thousand participants and-or visitors.
