Both Kings Mountain and East Rutherford are 0-2 in the SWC. The Mounties are 1-2 overall and the Cavaliers 0-3. “I thought we were mentally prepared last week,” said Coach Brooks. “We played real well in the first quarter, and then got a break and drove down to the 20, but didn’t get anything. After that, we lost our concentration.” The Warriors, fired up after a 37-yard field goal attempt by KM’s Tony Boyce fell inches short, got their offense going and scored three touchdowns in a span of just over two minutes. “We’re just so young and are not being able to stay in close ballgames with experienced clubs,” said Brooks. “We have a lot of seniors but most of them are inexperienced. We’ve got some seniors playing that should be in the ballgame and we’ve got to have those people step up and be our leaders and keep the other players and each other going.” Brooks said had the Moun taineers scored on the field goal try and gone ahead, the outcome of the game could have been dif ferent. “We let East Gaston have the ballgame in three minutes,” he said. “1 don’t feel good about it. We all played well for awhile in the first quarter and then we ail played bad. East Gaston certain ly showed it’s a lot better than 0-2.” Brooks said most of the Mountaineers need to “grow up.” “It’s going to take mental con centration if we’re going to com pete in the Southwestern Con ference,” he said. “Bad things happen when you let up. 1 guess well have to put more pressure on the players in practice and tell them they’re going to have to grow up now. 1 feel like we have a lot of players who don’t believe in themselves. That’s the main thing we have to work on.” t- The Mountaineers made a number of turnovers, including four fumbles and two pass in terceptions. They had two drives halted deep in East Gaston ter ritory (one on the missed field goal and another one at the two) and other mistakes led to three of the four East Gaston touchdowns. "This is a tough game,” said Brooks, “and you have to get tough every week to compete. -twsess” Markus Hager.. .strong safety for Mountaineers. Both are young and inexperienced with only 10 let- termen returning from last year, but, he adds, both teams are bet ter their records show. “This conference is as even as I’ve seen it,” says Brooks. “A lot of the teams are the same.
