Court Square Run Set The 1980 Shelby-Civitan third annual Court Square Run is still on course for a high noon start on Saturday, October 25 at the court square in downtown Shelby. The races will consist of a one mile fun run, a 5,000 meter sprint, a 10,000 meter dash and a 20,000 meter com petition. All races will start simultaneously and will consist of a run through tree lined avenues of Shelby, with the par ticipants going on an “out and back” course through the nearby countryside. All races will be cer tified as to length by a represen tative of the American Athletic Congress. There will be five divisions per race per gender (13 and under. 30-39, 40-49, over 50 and open) for a total of 40 divisions. The Civitan Club race com mittee has made many im provements for the annual Court Square Event. Twenty-three businesses in Cleveland County have given support contributions so that a first class race can be run. The businesses are Athletic Foot ware. This year, there will be a pre registration on Friday evening, October 24 in the church annex building at the court square for those runners wishing to go ahead and get that taken care of early. Harold Pless will be handl ing pre-registration from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 pjn. in the church annex. Regular registration the morning of the race will also be held in the church annex from 8:30 to 11J)0 a.m. Rest rooms will be available to runners in the church annex. Race brochures and applica tions can be picked up at the businesses supporting the race and at many other locations in Cleveland County. The Civitan Club expects 1,000 runners to the third an nual event and all money receiv ed from the race will go to Civitan charities. Sales Decline By Shearing Commercial Shearing, Inc. to day announced third quarter sales of S55,489,(X)0 and net ear nings of $3303,000 or $.40 a share for the third period which ended July 31. Nine-month sales totaled $175,469,000 with earn ings of $10,668,000 or $139 per share. Third quarter sales a year ago were $61374,000 with earn ings of $4342,000 or $.52 a share. Nine-month sales in fiscal 1979 were $179,923,000 with net earnings of $13,466,0(X) or $1.64 per share. The decline in sales and earn ings for this reporting quarter reflects the downturn of business activity in the capital goods market and, in particular, the construction, agricultural and materials handling equipment in dustries. This downturn was first felt early in the fiscal year and althoiitk it,{f|Cpws;rto) have stabilized, a significant improve ment in these markets is not ex pected for several months.
