East Rutherford
12-0 Friday
TuMday. S«pt«mb«r 30. 1980-UNGS MOUNTAIN HERALD-Pag* 3
Kings Mountain’s Moun
taineers drove 40 yards for a
touchdown on their first posses
sion of the night and went on to
blank East Rutherford 12-0 for
their first Southwestern 3-A
Conference win Friday night at
East.
9 The win evened the Moun
taineers’ overall record at 2-2.
The Cavaliers fell to 0-3 in the
SWC and 04 overall.
The winning touchdown was
set up when the Cavalier punter
couldn’t handle a low snap from
center, and the Mountaineer
defense swarmed him at the 40.
Led by the running of tailback
Tony Boyce, the Mounties
ground out the yardage three
and four yards at a time, and
Boyce went over from a yard out
on a fourth down play to give
KMHS a 6-0 edge.
It stayed that way until late in
the third period when defensive
end Chris Wright scooped up a
Cavalier fumble and rambled 65
yards for a TD.
^ The Mountaineers had a
balanced offensive attack, gain
ing 128 yards rushing and 70
passing. The defense held the
Cavaliers to under 100 yards. In
their two wins this fall (the other
one was over Ashbrook 19-0),
the Mounties have held their op
ponent under 100 yards total of
fense.
The rushing yardage was well-
distributed among several backs.
Jeff Lineberger led the way with
47 yards in 11 carries, Boyce ad
ded 41 in IS totes, Dougy
Wright gained 28 in seven tries
and Chris Wright 27 in five car
ries.
East Rutherford’s only offen
sive punch came from tailback
Chuck Surratt, who was the
game’s leading rusher with 70
yards, and came within one
block of breaking several long
runs.
The Cavaliers drove deep into
KM territory only once, that
cp^iqg in the ,f9prt.h period. The
march was halted by a pass in
terception by safety Markus
Hager at the 10.
Kings Mountain had three
other scoring chances, two
0 drives being stopped inside the
20 by loss of downs and the
other halted at the one on a pass
interception.
KMHS Coach Dan Brooks
praised his Mounties for “play-
ing harder”, but said he didn’t
know “that we played well
enough to win against a good
ballteam.”
“I’m not taking anything
away from East Rutherford by
saying that,” he said. “They
played hard and have the best
back we’ve seen except for Tim
my Kee of Burns. But we didn’t
play real good. It wasn’t a pretty
game but it counts in the win
column.”
Brooks said he felt the Moun
ties should have scored at least
two more times. “But,” he said,
“our mistakes hurt us. We’ve got
to concentrate on getting the job
done and quit stopping
ourselves.
“But I felt good about winn
ing,” he went on. “We hung
good. We played more people
and some of them did a real good
job. Dexter Tate did a good job
at split end for us and John
Barnette played well at comer-
back. We started John and his
playing well allowed us to play
Boyce only on offense.”
Tate, a senior out for football
for the first time, hauled in three
Mike Woodberry passes for 28
yards, and Mark F. Smith
caught two for 31. Woodberry
connected on 7 of 14 in all.
“1 thought Woodberry played
one of his better games,” said
Brooks. “He planted his foot and
threw the ball well. Darryl
Strong and Markus Hager
played well on defense for us and
Strong took more leadership.”
Brooks praised the offense for
moving the ball and the defense
for getting it in good field posi
tion.
“We didn’t punt all night,” he
said, “so that speaks well of the
offense. And the defense got the
ball for us in good field position
and kept East backed up all
night.”
The Mountaineers return
home Friday to host unbeaten
Crest, which is 4-0 and has a
defense that hasn’t been scored
on.
“We’ve got to get in a good
week of practice and play with a
lot of emotion,” Brooks said. “1
hope all the people will get with
us and help us out Friday night.”
The Mountaineers remain at
home next week to host North
Gaston in their annual
homecoming contest.
