Pastor Jerry Smith and Project Chairman Ronnie Whetstine ask the public to help this year. “All that is done will be greatly appreciated,” said Pastor Smith. “When you give to a child you give always,” he added. Harry Bathes Goforth of Rutherfordton, formerly of Kings Mountain, is probably the oldest living Goforth so closely related to both a Whig and Tory at the Battle of Kings Mountain. Goforth, visiting at the home of his nephew, H.A. Goforth and Mrs. Goforth, plans to return to Kings Mountain for the Battle Celebration activities. Youngest child of George Martin Goforth and Ellen Bridges Goforth, he was born in Rutherfordton County in 1894 and moved to Kings Mountain with his father and brother, James Thomas Goforth in 1914. Goforth joined the Army in 1918 and after a year’s service returned to Cliffside and lived with his brother, George Lee Goforth, while working in a machine shop. He married Laura Mable Greene May 28, 1919. The Goforths moved to Spin- dale in 1923 where he worked for Stonecutter Industries. In 1936 he started work at the Southern F reight & Express Co. He retired from that job at 62 years of age in 1956 and then took a job as Security Guard at Rutherfordton County Hospital in 1970 from which he retired at age 86 in May 1980. Goforth’s grandmother was Sarah Goforth, daughter of George Goforth and grand daughter of Preston Goforth, 1738-1780. His grandfather was HARRY GOFORTH George Clayton Goforth, son of John Preston Goforth and Isabella Smart Goforth, grand son of John Preston Goforth, 1750-80, the Revolutionary War hero at the Battle of Kings Mountain. John Preston Goforth was a Tory and Preston Goforth was a Whig. Sally Goforth, mother of George M. Goforth, was born in the Goforth Log Cabin near Kings Mountain and Mrs. Goforth reportedly went to the battle scene and carried home the dead body of her husband. The Harry Goforths are parents of one son, Harry B. Goforth, a lab technician at Spindale Mills, Inc. There are two granddaughters, Mrs. Debra Goforth McPherson, a teacher aide in Rutherfordton, and Miss Jenny Goforth, an x-ray techni cian at Rutherfordton Hospital, and a great-granddaughter, Jessica Lynn McPherson. Goforth, whose spryness and wit, belie his years, likes to stay busy and likes to get together with his Goforth kin and talk about history. He holds the distinction of being the oldest member of his dan who has retired from two jobs during a lifetime and at the age of 86 may decide to take another. 739-8583 Brush - Airless Spray CONE SIMPSON HOUSE PAINTER Route 4 Call After 6 p.m. or early Kings Mountain THE BEST FUZZBUSTER EVER JVIADE.
