Charger Defense Unscored On
Unbeaten Crest Here Friday Night
Kings Mountain’s Moun
taineers face their toughest test
of the season Friday night when
they host unbeaten Crest at 8
p.m. at John Gamble Stadium.
The Chargers, pre-season
favorites to win the rugged
Southwestern 3-A Conference,
are 3-0 in the league and 4-0
overall. Their defense is
unscored on.
Kings Mountain returns home
after two straight road games
with a 1-2 SWC record and 2-2
overall chart. Coach Dan Brooks
feels his Mounties can spring the
upset of the year if they play up
to their capabilities.
“Crest is real strong overall,”
says Brooks. ‘They lost only
three seniors off last year’s team,
and only one of those three
started.”
The Chargers, coached by
former Gardner-Webb assistant
John Taylor, run the wishbone
offense, and run it effectively.
This will be the only time this
year we’ll see the wishbone,”
said Brooks, “so our defense will
really have to be ready. They
run the triple option a lot and
run a lot of end sweeps.”
Len Litton, a l4S-pound
senior and son of former
Gardner-Webb head coach
George Litton, now assistant
principal at Crest, operates the
team from the quarterback posi
tion.
“With Litton at quarterback,
it’s like them having four runn
ing backs,” Brooks said. “Well
have to defend against all four of
their backs.”
The Chargers have two hard-
running fullbacks, 180-pound
Kibby Daves and 22S-pound
Greg Byars. Their big
breakaway threat is Robert Mc-
Cluney, a 160-pound junior
halfback.
“They’re real sound and
quick,” says Brooks. ‘They have
good personnel everywhere. 1
don’t see weak spot on their
whole team.
‘They run a lot of different
things on offense,” he went on.
“And they’re real good defen
sively. Their defense hasn’t been
scored on. The only team to
score on them. West Caldwell,
picked up a fumble and ran it all
the way.”
The Chargers have posted
easy SWC victories over
country-rival Shelby 21-0, East
Rutherford 7-0 and Chase 260.
They defeated West Caldwell
13-6 in non-conference action.
Coach Brooks said he saw
some improvement in the Moun
ties’ play in last week’s 120 vic
tory over East Rutherford. The
Mounties have been an up-and-
down team, losing to Bums 27-8,
beating Ashbrook 190, losing to
East Gaston 270 and then
defeating East Rutherford.
Needless to say, the Moun
taineers will have to play their
best game of the year to defeat
the Chargers.
‘This could be a real big one
for us,” said Brooks. “We need to
get real emotional this week. It
could make a good season for us
if we win.
“Crest has a lot of good peo
ple, but our kids can win,” he
went on. “It would really be a
big one.”
Brooks is urging the Kings
Mountain fans to turn out in
huge numbers and get behind
the players.
“A lot of it this week will be
emotion,” he said. “We need the
fans to get with us and help us
out in this one.”
FANS MUST PAY
Kings Mountain High Prin
cipal Bob McRae said today that
all fans who see Friday night’s
game between the Mountaineers
and Crest must pay the admis
sion fee. McRae said all persons
standing outside the fences will
be asked to come in or leave the
school grounds.
