C i Young, Young At Heart Steal The Opening Show Community spirit - that’s what the 200th Anniversary Celebration has been all about. ^ And it’s been hard to deter- ^mine which group of people have been most spirited, the young or the young-at-heart. Mrs. Larry Wood’s fourth grade class at East School and the Young at Heart Senior Citizens group from KM Depot Center stole the show Friday as they, along with U S. Senator Robert Morgan of Lillington, wopened the 200th festivities Fri day morning on Bicentennial Square. The musical skit by the young people and a musical rendition by Senior Citizens were held before a crowd of 150-200 peo ple on the sidewalks as wind whipped the flags lining the streets and a railroad train pass ed by. ® Dressed in pioneer style, the fourth graders depicted the march of the mountain men to the battle and of the Revolu tionary War Battle. John Brown, age nine, was dressed as Maj. Patrick Ferguson and stood atop an improvised mountain and challenged the rebels. Advancing troops mowed him down and he stumbled from his pasteboard '^mountain to the delight of the crowd. The Senior Citizens Band Flayed kazoos, drums, an electric bass, and washboard and Mrs. i Lydia Mitchell, 68, led the < crowd with her rendition of “I’m i So Glad Jesus Lives In Me.’’ There were other numbers such as “Battle Hymn of the |d^epublic,’’ and “Dixie” plus *^religious numberes. The senior citizens were dressed in red, white and blue. Senator Morgan told the crowd that ‘This great victory at Kings Mountain had significance far beyond this area where we stand today. The men who fought here were motivated by the spirit of independence. (%They realized that nothing less was at stake than the future of this country.” Mayor John Moss spoke brief ly of the Oct. 7, 1780 battle and jji||ed it “the event that turned tint of tlig ATiiei tear Rtv ulu- - tion and changed the course of history.” ^Church To Show Boom Rentals APARTMENT FOR RENT: Couples preferred.
