Stout Paints Ferguson GD-6885 Anniversary Special 25” COLOR TV $569 JET-86 Alan Stout, director of Schiele Nature Museum in Gastonia and a resident of Canterbury Road, has been painting nearly all his life but has particularly enjoyed painting water color portraits of Col. Patrick Ferguson and Virginia ^ter, which now hang at McDonald’s Restaurant in Kings Moun tain. Local history buffs will enjoy the paintings especially since Ferguson and Virginia’s story is featured in ‘Then Conquer We Must,” the outdoor drama which plays through Wednesday at KM Na tional Military Park Amphitheatre. Stout was commissioned by a collector in Chicago, III. to do the paintings, along with Paul Sims, a free lance artist from Gastonia. The six original paintings by the two artists have never been used before and are unique. Stout said his water color portraits of Ferguson and Virginia Salter required a lot of research. One of the oil pain tings show the British Colonel in full dress, the other is of his lover, the red headed Virginia, and the third is a winter snow scene of the grave site. Stout actually painted the winter scene in the snow at the Park. Fie depicts Virginia as about 26 years old, a plain looking girl in regular trailclothes, a col onial chemise, apron and weskit. Two days before the Kings Mounain battle, historians say she peeled potatoes for the troop to eat, grabbed a horse and ran after Ferguson with the mountain men chasing. According to legend. Stout says that only two of the mountain men had respect enough to bury her. Stout features Ferguson at 32 years old, five feet nine and approximately 160 pounds with auburn hair. Fie is in full British dress and over his arm is draped a crazy quilt overcoat which was handmade by Virginia. The tip of his sword is broken off, rem nant of a battle. Stout said that the two paintings are the first full-length portraits of the pair. Stout has painted professionally since 1965 and has exhibited in all 50 states.
