Jayvees Whip East Gaston Kings Mountain High’s jayvee footballers spotted East Gaston a 6-0 lead, then came back for a 12-8 win in Southwestern Conference jayvee action Thursday after noon at East Gaston. The Little Mountaineers, 3-3, host Shelby Thursday night at 7:30. East Gaston scored its lone touchdown with two minutes left in the half and went for a two-point conversion to make the score 8-0. Two plays after the kickoff, William Short went 60 yards behind some good downfield blocking by Philip Seism and Tom Potter to make the score 8-6 at intermission. Max Brooks scored on a 45 yard run, breaking several tackles along the way, in the fourth period to make the final score 14-8. “Except for the defensive let down when East Gaston drove for its only touchdown, we played a real good game,” com mented Coach Charlie Bums. “1 was a little better satisfied with the offense, which finally put some points on the board.” Kings Mountain rushed for 148 yards, with Short and Brooks accounting for most of them on the two long touchdown runs. Kings Moun tain had the ball on the East three yard line when the final gun sounded. The Mountaineer defense held the Warriors twice inside the 15 yard line. The guys are really improv ing,” noted Burns. “They’re get ting better and better.” Burns said Johnny Bolton, who was playing his first game as a punter, helped keep the East Gaston team in bad field posi tion much of the game. Tennis Team Wins Two More Kings Mountain High’s girts tennis team defeated East Rutherford and Crest last week to run their Southwest 3-A Con ference record to 4-0 and their overall mark to 6-2. The Mountainettes blanked East 8-0 Tuesday in a match which was shortened by darkness, and came back Thurs day to whip Crest 8-1. The Mountainettes are scheduled to play at Shelby to day in a match that will probably determine the SWC champion. They stay on the road Thursday to face Burns. They have won the conference title the last four years. “I was pleased with the im provement we showed as the season progressed,” Albergine added. “Spring Young was undefeated in the 50 and 100 meter dash and that was quite an accomplishment.
