Hugh Watts, Vice President- Maintenance at Carolina, said that the company will purchase 60 White sleeper cab tractors and 224 units with conventional cabs. The total amount involved in this purchase will be more than $12 million. Fifty of the sleeper cab tractors will be used in the company’s newest ven ture, Cardinal Contract Carriers, a subsidiary of Carolina Freight. The remaining units will be used in Carolina’s general com modities division. The 224 tractors will include 112 White Road Bosses and 112 Ford LNT 9000 units. This will not enlarge Carolina’s road fleet to any great extent since 204 old tractors will be used as trade-ins. However, the new equipment is expected to save, as previously stated, one million gallons of fuel annually plus a substantial reduction in first year maintenance costs. The new tractors are expected to operate at 6.5 miles per gallon as opposed to the 5.2 mpg ob tained from the units used in the trade-in. The company has been working on fuel conservation for some time and has improved fuel consumption by approxiamtely 6.8 percent during the first 10 months of 1980. Delivery of the new tractors will begin in January, 1981 and conclude in June. Watts said that the White and Ford tractors were selected because of driver environment as well as superiority in other areas. “We feel driver comfort is an im portant factor in the efficient operation of our equipment,” Watts said. Included in the upgrading pro cess is the purchase of 200 Trailmobile trailers, now being delivered. These are 45-foot, 13’ 6” high wedge - trailers with rollup doors. The trailers are smoothsided units which con tribute to a fuel efficient opera tion. This will be a one-for-one trade. The trailer purchase totals $3.9 million. In addition, eighty- four trailers are being purchased outright to be used in Alabama when Carolina opens this opera tion with seven new terminus in February. In the computer system upgrade in 1981, the company will add a third central processor to the two now in operation and four new disk drives. A third communications processor will also be added in 1981. These ad ditions will double the speed and memory of the computer system and will permit completion of the development of Carolina’s Customer information System. The cost of this upgrading pro gram will be $2,154 million, ac cording to J.M. Froneberger, Jr., Vice President-Data Services. Kenneth E. Mayhew Jr., Ex ecutive Vice President explain ed, ‘The new Customer infor mation System designed by Carolina personnel will permit more efficient processing of freight billings, cash collections, and accounts receivable transac tions. It will also make available updated information on the Company’s 150,000 customers on a real-time basis. In addition, it will provide for improved con trol over the flow of approx imately 180,000 shipments per month to insure on-time delivery without damage.” Kenneth G. Younger, Presi dent and Chief Operating Of ficer, commenting on the expen diture, said, “We have a great faith in the future and we are planning for it. These upgradings are continuations of planned programs. In addition, we feel that upgrading our tractor and trailer fleets and our computer capability will allow us to serve our custoemrs more efficiently and will vastly improve our energy conservation program.” WE TREAT!
