The Mountaineers, now 3-0 overall, scored a 73-62 win while the Mountainettes, now 2-1, completely outclass^ the Lady Warriors 56-31. The Mountaineers, picked in pre-season as one of the top two clubs in the SWC along with defending state champ R-S Cen tral, used a balanced scoring at tack to offset a 28-point perfor mance by East Gaston’s John Gregory. Point guard Carl Smith led the KMHS effort with 16 points. Paul Ingram added 14, Terrence Blalock 13 and Gerald Byers tmd Demetrius Goode 12 each. Derek Graham was the only other East Gaston player in dou ble figures with 10. Kings Mountain led the entire ballgame. The Mounties were out front by 15-10 after the first period, 34-19 at the half and 51-36 going into the fourth quarter. Kings Mountain’s girls outscored East Gaston 184 in the second period to break the game open. Coach David Brinkley got all of his players in to the game and praised the girls for their “team effort.” Sheryl Goode led the Moun tainettes in scoring with 9POCT? 19 points, and Diane Williams add ed eight. William led the reboun ding with 13 and Goode added 12. The game was tied at 12-all after the first period but Goode hit for eight points and Williams five in the second quarter as the Mountainettes broke to a 30-16 halftime advantage. KMHS was on top 42-25 going into the fourth quarter. Kings Mountain hit on 14 of 25 free throws to only three of 14 for East Gaston, and the Mountainettes outrebounded the Lady Warriors 44 to 25. “1 was real pleased with the team effort,” said Brinkley. “In the second quarter we calmed down and really started playing some good basketball. Our press caused a lot of turnovers in the second quarter and that made a big difference in the game. “1 was real pleased with our inside game again,” he added, “and I thought our guards play a lot better. They were a lot more consistent. East Gaston had trouble working the ball inside on us. We played good defense on the press and zone. “I was real pleased with the reserves,” he went on. “We were able to play everybody and played reserves the whole fourth quarter.” The two KMHS squads con tinue conference action Friday with a twinbill against arch rival Shelby.
