The victory was the fifth straight in SWC play and seventh straight over^l for the Mountaineers, who remained in a tie for the SWC lead with defending champion R-S Cen tral, which posted its 39th straight victory, 102-74 over South Point. The Kings Mountain girls moved back over the .500 mark at 3-2 in the conference and 4-3 overall. Gerald Byers, the only senior in the young KMHS lineup, had the best night of his career with 28 points. Paul Ingram was the only other double-digit scorer for the Mounties with 11. Chase kept the game within striking distance for three quarters, but the Mountaineers outscored the Trojans 26-6 in the fourth period to turn the game into a rout. The Mountaineers were up by only 16-12 after the first quarter, 31-25 at the half and 49-39 after three periods. Kings Mountain was ahead 39-17 go ing into the fourth period, when Coach David Brinkley cleared his bench and allowed the Lady Trojans to outscore the Moun tainettes 114 during the final eight minutes. Eight different players scored for the Mountainettes with seniors Diane Williams and Sheryl Goode leading the way with 12 and II points, respec tively. “It was a good game to get all the reserves in,” commented Coach Brinkley. “Chase was young and we were able to capitalize on their mistkes. We got on the boards good and ran the offense well.” The Mountainettes outre- bounded the Lady Trojans 44 to 21. Williams led the way with 11 and Trina Hamrick added nine. The two KMHS teams close out pre-Christmas play Friday night at East Rutherford. The girls will compete in the Holiday Tournament at West Mecklenburg Jan. 2 and 3 and the boys will play in the Cleveland County Tournament Jan. 2 and 3 at Burns.
