KMHS Wrestlers Win Kings Mountain High’s wrestlers, defending Southwestern 3-A Conference champions, opened regular season play Monday night at home with a 39-33 victory over North Gaston. The Mountaineers host arch rival Shelby tonight at 7:30 in their final match before Christmas. The Mountaineers picked up four wins by pins Monday, in cluding a pair of impressive vic tories by sophomores. Jimmy Watkins of the Moun taineers recorded a third period pin over Tommy Martin in a 132-pound match. Watkins was trailing 9-1 at the time. In another key match, soph Tommy Welch led the entire match and scored a pin over North Gaston’s Chip Raby, who finished second in the recent Gaston Invitational tournament. “Our guys really wrestled Junior High Jayvees Win Fourth Straight Kings Mountain Junior High’s jayvee boys scored their fourth straight victory Monday afternoon at East McDowell, 4642. Lavar Curry led the Little Patriots with 24 points. Tony Lewis added nine, Greg Young eight, and Rodney Ballew and John Pettus three each. Kings Mountain led most of the game after a 10-10 deadlock following the first period. The Little Mountaineers came from behind in the fourth quarter Friday to defeat Burns 58-53 in overtime, then outman- ned Chase 8441 Tuesday. Coach Danny McDowell takes his charges to East Ruther ford Friday afternoon for their final game of 1980. They resume play on Jan. 2 against R-S Cen tral. Kings Mountain trailed by six points late in the fourth quarter against Burns but made a late run and tied the game at 51-all with 40 seconds left. Burns had a chance to win in regulation but missed a last second shot. Frank Parker scored five of his 15 points in overtime to lead the KM victory. David Hager also scored 15 points, Avery Grier added 14 and John Barnett 12. Coach McDowell pointed to the Little Mounties’ defense dur ing the three minute overtime as the difference in the game. The Mounties went to a man to man after using a zone most of the se cond half because of foul trou ble. “John Barnett had a solid all- around game, and Chris Barnette had a super defensive and rebounding game in the se cond half,” said Coach McDowell. “This was a hard- fought victory for us.” «** Grier and Parker combined for 43 points Tuesday to lead the victory over Chase. Grier scored 23 oints and grabbed five re bounds and Parker scored 20 ixiints. Barnett had 10 points and five assists and David Peeler dished out seven assists. Kings Mountain opened with man to man pressure and ran up a 22-10 first quarter lead and 43-17 halftime advantage. KM was out fromt 63-31 going into the fourth period. “Our point guards had a super game,” said McDowell. ‘They really made our inside game go.” McDowell played all of his players and 10 of them took part in the scoring. “I got some outstanding play from my bench,” he said. “I was well pleased with my team’s play.” FRIDAY'S GAME KM (58)- Parker 15, Hager 15, Grier 14, J.
